Greetings, Internet Stranger! I’m Stella Jane, author of the travel memoir Get Lost, and welcome to a what to do on Nevis Island tour. Nevis is the smaller sister island of St. Kitts. Together, they form the country of St. Kitts and Nevis, which got its independence from the United Kingdom in 1983.

I have traveled around many islands in the Caribbean, and I’d been to St Kitts several times before. However, this was my first time getting to Nevis, and I’m so glad that I visited this peaceful and lovely island. I hope you’ll enjoy this perfect 24 hours of what to do on Nevis Island tour as much as I did!

What to Do on Nevis Island Tour

Morning: Explore Nevis’s Historical Attractions

No day of what to do on Nevis Island is complete without seeing some of Nevis’s most famous historical attractions. This island is best known for its most famous resident, and we’ll learn all about him and his smash Broadway musical very shortly. However, there’s more to Nevis than just being in the room where it happens.

I strongly suggest seeing Nevis with a local guide so that you can get the most out of your time, and that’s why I recommend this walking tour.

You can check rates and availability easily by going here.

Then get ready for…

Approximately Top 5: What to Do on Nevis Island

what to do on nevis island
1) Hamilton House

So, the most famous person to ever live on Nevis was the first Secretary of Treasury of the United States, Alexander Hamilton. He was born on Nevis and lived on the island until the age of nine. Our guide told us that he was brilliant, and so he was sent away from the island for his education.

Visitors to Nevis have always been interested in visiting the Hamilton House, where young Hamilton lived, but it’s become a much more popular destination since the hit Broadway musical, Hamilton. So thanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, for helping the economy of Nevis!

We got to see part of the museum, which is pretty tiny, but it does have a sad drawing of the duel with Aaron Burr that ended Hamilton’s life at a tragically young age. They also talk about how Hamilton ended his presidential ambitions by having an affair with a married woman, so they’re giving you the real Hamilton, warts and all.

2) Churches

If there’s one thing you can expect to see a lot of on Nevis, it’s churches. There are sixty churches on the island, which is pretty impressive, considering how small the island is. Many of the churches are Anglican because Nevis used to be a British colony. (In the United States, where I am from, we call the Anglican church the Episcopalian church.)

We saw at least one other Catholic church in Nevis, but our guide said that recently, many people are joining Pentecostal churches, which tend to have more active services than the Anglican churches do.

The oldest church in Nevis is actually on Nevis Peak, where you can get some amazing views of the whole country.

3) History of Nevis

We saw many buildings and monuments that taught us all about the history of Nevis and the country of St Kitts and Nevis. My favorite spot was when we passed by the monument to soldiers from Nevis who had been killed during World War I and World War II. Our guide asked which country they were fighting for, and people in our group didn’t know.

I was surprised because I thought it was obviously that they served in the British army. Even though St. Kitts and Nevis has been independent for decades, there are still some remnants of the British colonial period.

Probably the most popular connection to Britain is the fact that cricket is still an extremely popular sport on Nevis. Our guide said it was the main sport in the country. We passed by a group of schoolboys playing cricket and stopped to watch for a moment. I don’t know even one thing about cricket except that it’s a nice sport to watch when the weather is beautiful.

4) Nevis Hot Spring

Nevis Hot Spring is a wonderful natural phenomenon. The water is actually hot, so be prepared when you head over here. However, once you get used to the heat, it’s wonderfully soothing on your feet, especially when you’ve been walking around all day.

The hot spring is free to all, which is an exciting bonus! There is a lady there who rents towels, but if you have your own towel, you don’t need to rent from her. However, if you do have a little extra cash, it’s always nice to rent from the locals when possible.

And if you don’t believe me that I actually experienced the hot springs for myself on my day of what to do on Nevis Island, look! Here’s the proof in the form of my shiny painted toes!

5) Bath Hotel

The view from the roof of the historic Bath Hotel is pretty spectacular, as you can see from my photo above. However, I wouldn’t recommend trying to take this picture on your own. The Bath Hotel is being renovated, which means that there’s a lot of tiles around the roof, so you really only want to go there with a guide.

This hotel claims to be the first hotel in the Caribbean, and since it dates back to the 1700s, that could very easily be true. So if you’ve ever enjoyed a Caribbean vacation, thank the Bath hotel in Nevis for making it all possible.

Our guide introduced us to other St Kitts and Nevis icons by singing the St Kitts and Nevis national anthem and teaching us about the flag of the island nation. There was actually a nation wide contest to design the flag, and a schoolgirl’s design was chosen. The colors represent the land, blood, African heritage, and sunshine, which are all part of the history of this nation.

Those are all the secrets of the tour of Nevis that I can share for now.

Afternoon: Relax on Pinney’s Beach

I’ve been to many, many islands in the Caribbean, and pretty much all of them have amazing beaches. But Nevis might honestly have the nicest beach I’ve ever been to because of the peaceful vibes and the stunning quality of the water. I would go back to Pinney’s Beach in a heartbeat.

Obviously you’re not going to get to this beach on a walking tour, but there are tours that will take you to Pinney’s Beach.

Check rates and availability here if you want to experience this treat!

And I’ll be happy to share with you…

Three Fun Facts: Pinney’s Beach

what to do on nevis island
1) Will someone feed me?

Yes! There are definitely restaurants on Pinney’s Beach. I recommend Lime Beach Bar, which has a delicious lunch and plenty of food and drink at a very affordable price.

I ordered the fried grouper, which is served battered in beer with a passion fruit glaze. It was piping hot, crispy, and delicious. However, they have plenty of other options like chicken or vegetarian dishes, if fish is not your passion.

The sides are equally good. I had the coleslaw, which was sweet because of the raisins, but not gloopy, and the Nevis Rice. I don’t know what makes the rice specially Nevis Rice. Probably I should have asked.

This restaurant is also famous for its rum raisin ice cream, which has loads of real raisins and LOADS of rum. Are they the same raisins that are used in the coleslaw? I probably should have asked.

2) What about drink?

Ah, you’ve come to the right spot, Internet Stranger, if you want to be advised about beverages on the lovely island of Nevis. If you book the tour of Pinney’s Beach, you’ll get rum punch included.

Like most rum punch that I’ve had in the Caribbean, it’s got a little bit of spicy kick and plenty of rum. (If you’re not on the tour, I’m pretty sure the restaurants will sell you rum anyway.)

I also recommend trying a local beer called Carib. (The brewery is mainly located in Trinidad, but they have breweries in St Kitts and Nevis as well.) It’s a light and refreshing lager, just perfect for pairing with a mystery novel and a day at the beach.

3) What’s so amazing about this beach?

So, some things you can’t entirely put into words. But the sand is so soft and golden, and the water! I have never been in such warm and soothing and calm water in all my life.

I felt as if I were back in my mother’s womb. (Not that I remember what it’s like being in my mother’s womb, but you get the general idea.)

And just look at that fabulous natural surrounding! It really is the ideal spot for a beach vacation!

I hope I’ve convinced you to give Pinney’s Beach a try!

Don’t forget to book your spot in advance!

That way you’ll be sure that your relaxing beach vacation is taken care of!

Evening: Enjoy Your Cruise Ship!

If you, like me, are visiting Nevis as part of a cruise ship shore excursion, you’ll take the ferry from Nevis back to Basseterre, the capital of St Kitts. Then you’ll head to Port Zante, where your cruise ship is docked. You can always do a bit of shopping in the port before you head back on the ship. I especially like buying skirts at Carabelle Batik.

The first thing I always do when I get on board the cruise ship is pick up the cocktail special of the day. I take it back to my room, so I can enjoy it on my private balcony. (Yes, I always think it’s worth it to get my own private balcony, just for the views.)

On my latest Royal Caribbean cruise, which stopped on St Kitts and Nevis, they had a different theme night each night in the main dining room. So fun, and a great way to try different foods. This night, the theme was Mediterranean, so I started with the mezze appetizer.

As you can tell, this came with a mini Greek salad, some pita bread, hummus, and tsatsiki, which is that cool cucumber dip. Not bad for an all inclusive cruise ship dinner.

what to do on nevis island

For the main course, I had the lamb because nothing says Mediterranean cuisine quite like lamb. The flavor was most robust, and the lamb was nice and tender.

For the dessert, they featured creme brulee. I’m not one hundred percent sure this is the most Mediterranean dessert that I can think of, but it is popular in France, which is partially on the Mediterranean, so I suppose it counts. And breaking through the sugar shell in the creme brulee is always tons of fun.

In the evening, take advantage of all the great activities there are to do on a cruise ship. You can go listen to live music in the lounge or check out the ice skating show if your ship has a rink. (I’m not exaggerating because some ships really do have their own rink.)

My favorite thing to do is check out one of the performances in the main theater, whether it’s a musical performance or a comedy show. Then cuddle up with your precious towel animal. It’s the perfect end to a perfect day of what to do on Nevis Island!
