Morning: Montmartre Walking Tour

Of course, we all like to imagine that we’re the kind of tourist who can just swan about a foreign or unfamiliar city by ourselves, magically finding all the hidden treasures and absorbing the culture. But how often is that actually the case?

That’s why I like to take walking tours when I travel. They’re affordable, they’re a great way to meet local guides and other travelers, and they teach me things I never would have discovered on my own. Some people like pay what you wish tours, but I don’t like those because the guides are often financially exploited by the companies. I prefer to pay people a living wage.

That’s why I recommend the Hidden Montmartre walking tour. It’s an affordable price, you’ll travel with a small group so it won’t be too overwhelming or crowded, and a snack is even included. It’s a great way to start the day!

Then get ready to experience…

Approximately Top 5: best of what to do Montmartre

best things to do in montmartre
1) All the Moulins

What’s up with all the moulins in Montmartre? Above you can see the Cafe des Deux Moulins, which was featured in the famous movie Amelie or, as it is called in French, Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amelie Poulain.

And of course, there is the famous Moulin Rouge, which still exists, though Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman no longer perform there.

best things to do in montmartre

Well, Montmartre used to be mostly farmland, and moulin is French for windmill. It just makes sense that you would need windmills to maintain your farms. The Moulin Rouge club became famous for the cancan dance, but our guide, whom I shall call Henri, said that the cancan was really an English dance, not a French dance.

I…have a very hard time imagining most Brits I know doing the cancan, but maybe I just know the wrong English people.

2) Street Art

Montmartre has always been a famous neighborhood for artists, and Henri told us that it has become a popular destination for street artists. The thing about street art is that it changes all the time, so when you go exploring the best of what to do Montmartre, I’m sure the works you see will be different.

Are you a fan of the film The Princess Bride? Then you might get a kick of these stickers of Andre the Giant, who played Fezzik, which have become popular street art. I believe the technical term for these stickers is OBEY Giant. They used to be all underground and independent, and now you can get these images on expensive clothes, which is sadly the way of the world.

And here we have a piece by the French street artist Invader, whose designs look like images from old video games. (You can see his creature hidden on the top of this chimney. How in heckfire did he get up there without being spotted?)

Finally, you might see this giant letter A inside a heart on stickers all over Montmartre. This stands for the group Love and Anarchy. Makes sense and is easy to read, even if you don’t speak French.

3) Snack Time!

Our next stop was for the snack break, and we were allowed to choose either a plain croissant or a chocolate stuffed one. I got chocolate because I never turn down free chocolate.

There was so much chocolate and butter in this baby that I honestly didn’t have room for lunch. And we have a big dinner ahead of us, so you might not want lunch either.

We ate our snack in this adorable park. It’s public now, but Henri told us that it would have been a private park owned by rich people in the days before the French Revolution.

The government eventually told the rich that they weren’t allowed to have such large private parks anymore, so now most wealthy families in the area just have small private parks and the government maintains the rest.

And an added bonus is that there’s tons of nice places for tourists to sit and eat croissants all over Paris!

4) Lapin Agile

Moulin Rouge is the more famous cabaret, but if you want to have a more authentic Montmartre cabaret experience, check out Lapin Agile. I have never actually been to a show there, but Henri recommended it, and Henri is never wrong.

The cabaret didn’t always have this name. An artist named Andre Gill made a sign for the cabaret showing a rabbit jumping, for some inexplicable reason. So people started calling the cabaret Le Lapin a Gill, which means Gill’s rabbit. But then this got turned into Lapin Agile, which means the agile rabbit. Oh puns! When will you never not be hilarious?

5) Statues

Montmartre also has some quality statues that you can find on the tour. You might notice that the bust above has a very unusual bra situation going on. Henri said that this was because if you rub her boobs, supposedly it will guarantee a great sex life.

Well, I rubbed the boobs, and I’m still waiting for any change, but maybe I just need to give it time. I don’t have a real sense of how quickly magic boobs are supposed to work.

Here’s Saint Denis, the patron saint of France, carrying his own decapitated head around. The life of a medieval saint was pretty rough, yo.

I also enjoyed this statue of a man walking through a wall. But be careful when you approach him because these tourists came too close and they were sucked into the wall, never to be seen again.

24 Hour Treasure: Sacre Coeur

You’ll end the tour near this famous basilica, Sacre Coeur. Admission to the church isn’t included on the tour, but it’s free to go inside anyway. I needed to pass through a brief security inspection when I went, but the line moved pretty quickly.

Tours aren’t allowed inside because this is an active church and people are praying. So be quiet and respectful, but do enjoy the beautiful interior, especially the mosaics.

Afternoon: Musee de Montmartre

Montmartre is an insanely popular tourist destination, but a lot of people seem to skip the Musee de Montmartre. This is a total shame! As you can see from my photos, the Musee de Montmartre has a beautiful garden, which is a great spot to rest your feet after you’ve been strolling all over Montmartre in the morning.

On top of that, the museum is full of beautiful art from artists who lived in Montmartre, and you can actually visit an authentic Montmartre artist’s studio here. Sure, there’s a fee to get in the museum, but you paid to go to Paris, didn’t you? One small museum admission ticket won’t kill you.

Sadly, I can’t teach you about every single object in the museum, but I can get you started with…

Three Fascinating Facts: Musee de Montmartre

best things to do in montmartre
1) Why is Montmartre Special?

One of the things I like about the Musee de Montmartre is that they feature paintings that show how the neighborhood has evolved over the years. Above, you can see paintings of the windmills when Montmartre was mostly farmland.

best things to do in montmartre

However, in 1860, Montmartre officially became part of Paris, and so you can see how the government starting building avenues and making the area more urban. Just think, if it weren’t for all this urban progress, we wouldn’t have Emily in Paris today. (No, I haven’t seen even one episode of that show.)

Then the British beat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo and forced all the French to start doing the cancan. (Or something like that–I’m not one hundred percent up on my European history.)

2) What are the coolest objects in the museum?

So glad you asked! There are a billion options to choose from, but here are a few of my favorites. First, you can see the actual painting of the “Lapin a Gill”, jumping quite agilely.

best things to do in montmartre

And here is a real phone from a cafe called Au Reve, which means “In the dream”. Lots of local artists and writers used this actual phone, but my favorite is probably Georges Simenon, who wrote the Inspector Maigret mystery series.

best things to do in montmartre

And here we have the famous posters by Toulouse-Lautrec, advertising local clubs and cabarets like The Moulin Rouge…

best things to do in montmartre

And here’s one for the now defunct Divan Japonais. Once you get familiar with his style, it’s pretty easy to spot a Toulouse-Lautrec. And it’s even easier to appreciate his work when you are zonked out on absinthe.

best things to do in montmartre

And here is a swing that’s so old, Renoir actually painted it. (He painted its image in a picture; he didn’t put paint on the swing itself.) I honestly don’t know if you’re allowed to sit on the swing or not, but I didn’t dare.

3) Are there special exhibits?

Yes, indeed. When I visited, the special exhibit showcased an artist named Charles Camoin. He was a Fauvist, which means that he used lots of bright colors and abstract shapes. (The most famous Fauvist was Henri Matisse.)

Camoin was actually friends with Matisse, and one of the best paintings in the exhibit was a portrait of Madame Matisse herself. But I also enjoyed Camoin’s bright landscapes, which made me feel like I was in the South of France myself, and I kind of always wish I were in the South of France.

best things to do in montmartre

In case you were wondering, Fauve actually means “wild beasts” in French, and I think the Fauvists were dubbed wild beasts by their critics because they used so much color. Are wild beasts notorious for using too much color in their paintings? I might be meeting the wrong wild beasts.

Evening: Dinner at Le Clarence

OK, I know I said this was a day of the best of what to do Montmartre, and you are welcome to stay here for the evening and see a show at the Lapin Agile. However, I can never resist the chance to have an amazing meal in Paris, so I’m heading to Le Clarence, which has oft been voted one of the best restaurants in the world.

As you will see, there was an insane amount of food in this meal…at least 25 dishes altogether. Sure, many of the dishes were one bite, but this decadence really needs to be experienced to be believed. I didn’t write down notes on every single dish, so I will just give some general themes and let my photos do the talking.

best things to do in montmartre

I ordered the seven course tasting menu, so how could this turn out to be 25 different dishes? Well, it seemed like each course contained several different dishes, like variations on a theme. I started with several different expressions of langoustine and tomato.

best things to do in montmartre

I enjoyed my day of the best of what to do Montmartre in summer, so of course you have to have lots of tomatoes.

Just look at the color on these beauties!

Are we done with the langoustines?

best things to do in Montmartre

No, we are not.

best things to do in Montmartre

OK, now we’re done with the langoustines, and we’re moving on to some perfect expressions of ham.

best things to do in Montmartre

Truly the relationship between this ham and the ham you find in the deli counter is like the relationship between a fine Italian sports car and a Yugo. (I’m guessing because I don’t know how to drive.)

best things to do in Montmartre

I honestly don’t know how the chef manages to come up with so many amazing variations on these ingredients.

best things to do in Montmartre

OK, now we’re moving to the shellfish portion of the evening.

best things to do in Montmartre

I feel like when people talk about French cuisine, they often mention things like cheese or wine, but France has amazing shellfish as well. After all, they’ve got a ton of coastline.

best things to do in Montmartre

Got to love any restaurant that gives you a fish course and a shellfish course. Don’t be shellfish, do share your shellfish, as my grandmother always used to say.

best things to do in Montmartre

OK, at this point in the evening, I got so blissed out on my food that I started taking blurry photos. It was NOT because I had too much wine. Ahem.

best things to do in Montmartre

This course would also make an excellent hat to wear at a British royal wedding.

best things to do in Montmartre

And now we come to what I call the parade of pigeon.

best things to do in Montmartre

I’m from New York City, and I’ve seen a lot of pigeons in my day, and I never knew they could taste this delicious.

best things to do in Montmartre

Maybe they are not using NYC pigeons at Le Clarence.

best things to do in Montmartre

OK, at this point in the evening, I was invited to the kitchen to enjoy some fried chicken with the chef. (Not a joke.) Then it was time for the dessert courses to begin.

best things to do in Montmartre

My desserts seemed to be organized around honey and strawberries, and I honestly can’t think of a more perfect theme for a summer dessert.

best things to do in Montmartre

Perhaps the best dessert was this piping hot, miniature clafoutis. Look how cute it is! I didn’t even know you could make clafoutis for one. (Clafoutis for One might be the perfect title for my autobiography.)

best things to do in Montmartre

More honey.

best things to do in Montmartre

Just wave after wave of honey, experimenting with all the different textures that honey can have.

best things to do in Montmartre

As my waitress said, “We never stop!”

best things to do in Montmartre

OK, this might not be the last dessert, but it is the second to last dessert.

best things to do in Montmartre

And we conclude with a farm fresh macaron and the most perfect bowl of strawberries I have ever eaten. I liked that a fancy restaurant like this would serve some flawless produce at the end of the evening. Way to let the ingredients speak for themselves. And it was a perfect end to our day of the best of what to do Montmartre

Where to Stay?

Paris, you may have heard, is a rather popular city for tourists. That means you’ll never be starved for choices for where to stay during your day of the best of what to do Montmartre. The important thing is to pick the right neighborhood. In Paris, they don’t always say neighborhood, they might say arrondissement.

And my favorite arrondissement to stay in is the 14th. Most of the Montparnasse neighborhood is in the 14th, so there’s always tons of people around. That way I feel safe as a solo traveler. The last time I was in Paris, I stayed at the Hotel du Lion.

The rooms were small, but clean, the breakfast was very good and filling, and the price was amazing. Plus, the location was super convenient and right by the metro, so it was easy to get to Montmartre, even though I wasn’t in Montmartre.
