One: Morning Food Tour

If you are here looking for the best walking food tours of Rome, you probably already know why food tours are such a great idea. On a food tour, you get to sample many different kinds of food. On most of the food tours that I have been on, I have been able to sample at least six different treats, and as you will see, on these walking food tours of Rome, we will be able to try much more than that.

This morning food tour that I recommend right here will also save you money. It was enough food to satisfy me for both lunch and breakfast, but if I had tried to buy all of these foods on my own, I would have spent oodles more money.

You can go ahead and book this amazing tour right here.

Then get ready to eat some of the most amazing treats you will ever put in your happy mouth.

The first stop on the food tour is the best Italian way to start any day: with a delicious Italian coffee. I visited Rome in August, which is the hottest month possible, and so I asked to have my coffee on ice because I am from New York City, and we love our iced coffee. Apparently Italians can drink their coffee hot no matter the weather, to which I say te salut.

Now, this bright orange drink in my photo might be confusing you a little bit because it is definitely not a coffee. You are one hundred percent correct! This is no coffee at all. Instead it is an Aperol Spritz. We normally associate this slightly bittersweet and delicious beverage with Venice, but you can get it in Rome as well.

I had this drink because I opted for the upgraded drink package with the tour, which I do recommend, if you like a tipple. After all, how often are you in Rome? When in Rome…drink as much Aperol Spritz as possible! I think that is how the saying goes.

There was a different couple on the food tour that opted for the Prosecco instead, which was the other drink upgrade choice. This might be a little easier on you, if you are not used to Italian day drinking.

Every region in Italy has its own special food traditions. Of course, I recommend feasting on the local delicacies when you are in town, like the famous Florentine steak when you are in Tuscany.

Rome is in the Lazio region, and one of the specialties of that area is the delicious suppli. These are fried rice balls that are filled with deliciousness like cheese and ground meat and tomato sauce. Street food does not get any better than these sweet treats.

Most of the places where we ate had seating, but there was not enough room to sit for these snacks. However, I did not mind standing at all because we’re just working off the calories from all this amazing food, and on top of that, suppli do not take long to eat.

If you have the upgraded drink package, you get a lovely glass of white wine to enjoy with your suppli. Otherwise, you will just have to feast on the suppli, wine free.

I assume if you are on vacation in Italy and interested in taking an Italian food tour that you are a fan of pizza. Frankly, who is not a fan of pizza? It is one of the most delicious foods known to man. And on this tour, you are exceptionally lucky because you get to try three different types of pizza. That is just one thing that makes this one of the best walking food tours of Rome.

The first type, which you can see in my photo above, is the classic Margherita pizza. This is made with mozzarella cheese, tomato sauce, and basil. According to our guide, it was made for Queen Margherita of Italy, so the pizza creator wanted to use the colors red, green, and white, which are the colors of the Italian flag. So this pizza is both delicious and patriotic!

The other two types of pizza I was much less familiar with. Do you see this pizza in my photo above? Can you guess what the toppings are? That is right! This is just pizza crust topped with tomato sauce. It is yummy, but frankly everything is better with cheese.

And if you think this pizza looks just like bread, you are correct again! However, this crust was much more flavorful than the pizza crust I am used to having back home. No one would ever throw out the crusts of their pizza if it was normally this tasty.

We also come to the last of our drink upgrades. Here you get a choice between a beer or a soft drink. It is nice that they offer a non alcoholic drink because after an Aperol Spritz and a glass of white wine, I was not sure that I could really handle a beer.

If you are wondering about the couple on the tour, the wife got the Chinotto soda with me, and the husband got the beer. Chinotto is a little bitter, a little sweet, and a lot citrusy. The Italians seem to love slightly bitter drinks. Who knows why?

Before our final course, which will be pasta, we got to sample some wonderful cheeses. This soft cheese that you can actually see in my photo above is called burrata.

I did not know this before I took the tour, though I love burrata, but burrata is actually a mixture of cream and mozzarella cheese. It is one of the creamiest and most decadent tastes you can experience.

best walking food tours of Rome

Ready for more cheese? Of course you are! We have a harder Italian cheese and a softer goat cheese. That way you can experience a wide variety of textures and flavors.

I know I said that you cannot have an Italian food tour without pasta. But you really, really, really cannot have an Italian food tour without pasta. I am sure that technically speaking someone could go to Italy and have a good time even if they did not like pasta. I am just not sure how it would be possible.

On this tour we had two types of pasta. One of them was the classic spaghetti with fresh tomato sauce. Hey, it is a classic for a reason. (And that reason is that it is delicious.)

The other is another Roman specialty, cacio e pepe. You make this sauce out of pepper and Pecorino Romano cheese. Simple, delicious, and flawless.

Are you ready for dessert? Are you ready for two desserts? Even better! Our first dessert on this tour was the popular Sicilian classic known as the cannoli.

To make a cannoli, you take a crispy pastry shell and fill that shell with some type of creamy filling. My favorite is the ricotta cheese filling, but you can get other options like a vanilla cream as well. I get a cannoli for my birthday every year, and I regret nothing.

You might be craving some gelato for dessert, and you are in luck! We have some wonderful gelato waiting right here for you. You actually get to try two different flavors and you can select any flavor you want.

I got hazelnut, aka nocciola in Italian, as well as strawberry sorbet. Which option will you go for?

Two: Trastevere Food Tour

The Trastevere Food Tour, which you can find right here, is different from the morning food tour in many ways. First of all, it is confined to the adorable neighborhood of Trastevere. Trastevere is kind of like the Latin Quarter in Paris, kind of like my home neighborhood of Greenwich Village in New York City, and completely charming in its own right.

The second reason this tour is different from the first is that it takes place in the evening. On this tour, you will experience about ten different amazing Italian dishes, along with some Italian wines. An evening of pleasure awaits!

Just try the tour, and you will surely see why it is one of the best walking food tours of Rome. Just book the tour right here. If this tour isn’t available when you have your vacation time in Rome, try this tour, which is very similar.

24 Hour Tip

You might arrive in Trastevere a little early, and in fact I suggest that you do this. Trastevere is a beautiful neighborhood, and at least you will want time to see the golden inside of the sweet little Santa Maria in Trastevere Church. So do not say this blog never gave you any helpful tips.

And once the tour time arrives, and you head for your destination, you can start to anticipate all the amazing Italian treats you are about to eat!

best walking food tours of Rome

Up first, we ate at a special local trattoria. This is kind of the Italian equivalent of a bistro. If you go to a good trattoria, you will get Italian classic foods at a reasonable price. Our guide told us that if you find a trattoria where Italians are eating, like this one, you will be set.

This trattoria was our appetizer stop, so we bit into some plump melon served with prosciutto and burrata. We already got to eat some burrata on the first of the walking food tours of Rome, so it is always exciting to have a two burrata day.

best walking food tours of Rome

Our next stop might be my favorite. This is a building that is so old that its wine cellars are more aged that the Colosseum! That is crazy! We do not have any buildings that old in New York City. You have to come to Rome to experience this kind of history.

I mentioned the wine cellars, so you can imagine that the wine is the focus for our stop here. There were snacks, and my favorite was a cauliflower puree topped with olive oil. But did any of the snacks compare with wine made with grapes that are raised in volcanic soil? Not quite, but that is a reflection of how good the wine was.

And you might be expecting the next stop to also have a savory snack, so we can save the sweets for the end. Yet, no. Here we are going to have a sweet break to snack on some freshly made cookies before going on to some more savory snacks.

best walking food tours of Rome

Wow! Just look at all those cookie options we got to feast on. My favorites were the “brutta ma buoni”. You can see these cookies in the middle of that platter, and the name means “ugly but good”. I say they are ugly but delicious!

best walking food tours of Rome

Back to the savory stuff! We are getting to snack on some decadent and fatty porchetta, which is one of my favorite Italian treats of all time. Truly Italians have perfected the art of roast pork.

There are vegetarian options for all the snacks on the tour, so the vegetarian gentleman in our group got to have cheese instead of porchetta. He said the cheese was good, but there was not enough for me to try, so we will have to take his word for it.

best walking food tours of Rome

We have two more snacks left before the main course! Can you believe how much food there is on this tour? Our first treat are these Roman classic stuffed rice balls known as suppli. These are extremely more-ish and I could snack on them all day.

best walking food tours of Rome

Our final snack before the sit down part of the dinner was this Roman pizza. You can tell it is Roman because the bread is square and a little thick, and it is just topped with tomato sauce. This would be the perfect after school snack for any discerning child.

best walking food tours of Rome

Finally, our main course awaits! We get the chance to sit down and feast upon three different types of pasta and pasta-esque dishes: ravioli, gnocchi, and cacio e pepe.

All of them were yummy, but the cacio e pepe was my favorite. How can a simple sauce made of pepper and cheese be so delicious? It is truly magic.

best walking food tours of Rome

For our final stop on the tour, of course we need to have dessert, and what is better for dessert in Rome than gelato? We stopped at a gelato shack known for its creative flavors, and you can pick any two.

I selected cherry sorbet, because it was summer, and Kentucky chocolate, which I told was actually made with tobacco. Did it taste like tobacco? No, just a very strong chocolate flavor. But tobacco is a plant, so it makes sense someone would try to use it in food.

24 Hour Tip

Is this one of the best walking food tours of Rome? You bet your sweet bippy it is! And it is right there, easy for you to join.
