1) Venice Food Tour

You probably know all about Italian and Italian-American food, right? Who doesn’t love pizza, pasta, and the like? Sad, lonely people, that’s who. But you might not be as familiar with the wonders of Venetian food. At least, I definitely was not when I visited the city.

That is why I recommend trying the Rialto Farmers Market Tour with Venice Food Tours so that you can learn what makes the food in Venice so special.

One of the most amazing things about eating in Italy is that each region has its own specialties, and today we are going to feast on the specialties of the Veneto.

Check rates and availability by going here!

I am not going to tell you everything I tried on one of the best Viator tours in Venice Italy. I also cannot guarantee that you will eat everything that I ate. However, I can give you an excellent idea of what to expect!

One of the things that makes Venetian food special is its copious use of seafood. After all, it is right on the water! You have to cross the water to get anywhere in the city. (However, I do not recommend eating any seafood you might find in the canals of Venice.)

Our seafood platter contained squid, shrimp, and sardines, and they were all simply delectable. It is harder to find these seafood treasures in the Italian American restaurants in my hometown of New York City, which is just one reason that it was so exciting and delicious to take this food tour.

As you can probably tell from my photo above, the second place we visited was not exactly gorgeous. However, its food was delicious, and everyone there, except for the food tour group, was Italian, so we all felt totally like locals dining here.

There were no available seats here because it was such a hole in the wall, but the food was yummy enough that I did not mind standing.

We tried two of the wonderful miniature sandwiches, and truly the Italians are wizards of the sandwich arts. One was a vegetarian sandwich with artichokes, and the other was a pork sandwich. (If the Italians are generally sandwich wizards, they are truly the Gandalfs of pork sandwiches.)

Did you know that Venice is famous for a special butter cookie called the Bussolai Buranei? You can easily recognize it from my photo above because it is shaped like a squiggle. You can dip it in coffee or a sweet wine, which I suppose makes it Venice’s answer to the biscotti, which is a specialty in Florence.

The non squiggle cookies are named sfogliatine and made with puffed pastry. They are as light as air, unlike the denser bussolai buranei, but both are delicious.

Is there such a thing as too many carbs in a day of Italian eating? I think that is impossible. How about trying a plate of cheesy risotto and a glass of refreshing Prosecco?

I was sort expecting the risotto would just have Parmesan on it because that is what I am used to getting back home.

However, this risotto focused restaurant specializes in using imaginative ingredient combinations in the risotto, so we got to try walnuts, blue cheese, and endive in ours, like some exotic risotto salad. Delicious!

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

Did you think that risotto was all the carbs we were going to have? Foolish mortal! Our perfect Venetian lunch needs to include both risotto AND pasta!

Because we are in Venice, that pasta is going to have a seafood twist. You have penne with shrimp and tomato sauce on one hand and a black squid ink pasta on the other. Yum!

Are you finally ready for dessert? I am not always the biggest tiramisu fan in the world, but I liked the tiramisu in Italy much better than the tiramisu I sometimes get at home in Italian American restaurants.

It is ladyfinger cakes soaked in alcohol and combined with cream, chocolate, and coffee. Is it healthy? I can’t imagine that it is. But who wants to be healthy in Venice?

2) Murano and Burano Tour

There are tons of amazing things to do in Venice. But do not feel confined to the canals and main streets or the most popular attractions. Any trip to Venice really should include a boat trip to the most popular islands like Murano and Burano.

That is why I suggest booking this excellent and very affordable Murano and Burano tour. You will get to experience the beauty of Venetian glassblowing, see how lace is made in Burano, and explore some of the most charming streets in Venice.

Check rates and availability of this tour by heading here.

If you can stand it, I suggest getting an early start. That way you will be able to avoid the crowds, which can be tricky in Venice. But when you get up early, this is what St. Mark’s Square looks like:

I definitely felt that getting up early was worth it in order to experience this beauty.

Our tour guide knew so much about Venice that there is no way I could possibly remember all of the fun facts that she shared with us. However, I do want to tell you about some of the things that we learned on the tour, so you can decide whether or not you want to experience it for yourself!

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

If you have heard of Murano before the tour, it is probably because the island is extremely well known for glassblowing. Any tour to Murano needs to stop at a glass studio like the New Murano Gallery. Of course we got to experience a live glassblowing demonstration, which always looks like magic to me.

I have seen glassblowing at other places, like the New York Renaissance Faire, but I had never seen someone fashion a glass horse out of nothing but melted glass and tiny scissors before. What a nifty trick!

When the demonstration is over, you will have some time to explore the gallery and the town of Murano itself before the boat will leave for the next destination. Many of the works in the gallery are thousands upon thousands of dollars, but one guy on the tour actually bought one! I probably should have found out if he was single, but I think his wife was with him.

However, the gallery store has plenty of more affordable pieces of glass, like the stunning red glass earrings I bought for myself.

Murano itself is not as famous for beauty as the next island, Burano, is, but it is still really charming, so I do suggest wandering around a bit here. The streets are much more peaceful and quiet than the streets of Venice or Burano.

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

At least walk far enough so you can get a glimpse of the famous leaning tower of Venice. I can’t guarantee that the glass Christmas tree will be there when you visit, but maybe you will get lucky.

Make sure that you get to the boat on time so you do not miss the next sailing to Burano! Your guide will be good about letting you know what time you leave, but it might be good to find a buddy to wander around with, especially if you are traveling by yourself like I was.

But do not worry too much! I did not miss the boat and neither did anyone else from my group.

After the glassblowing stop on Murano, it is just a short boat ride to Burano, which is famous for its gorgeous handmade lace. You will definitely be able to watch them make lace on this excellent tour.

Of course, you can also buy some lace at the shop when the demonstration is done. I bought one piece for myself and one for my sister, and I thought the price was much better than what I would have gotten back home in New York City. However, I did not remotely feel any pressure to buy anything, so do not worry on that score.

There is a reason that the streets of Burano are a little more crowded than the streets of Murano, and it is largely because Burano is covered in beautiful and adorable colored houses. According to our guide, the houses are so colorful because it made it easier for the homeowners to tell the houses apart.

This does not make a ton of sense to me because I have never once forgotten which house was mine, and I do not have a very good sense of direction, but then maybe I am missing something because I am not from Burano.

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

Just grab a snack like some gelato, in case you do not have time to get lunch in Murano, and then go off for a lovely stroll around some of the prettiest homes you ever will see.

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

Really make an effort in Burano to turn away from the masses of tourists and go exploring along the side streets. You will see some gorgeous homes as well as some more unusual sights. I still remember hearing an unusual noise that sounded like someone was hurting a kitten.

I followed the sound, all heated up for some kitten rescue, and instead I found two turtles in love. (Go ahead and search for “turtle mating sounds” if you want to experience this oddness.) So believe me when I say you never know what you will find in Burano.

Do your best to get a seat by the window as your speedboat heads back to the main part of Venice. Do not worry about getting bored because your guide will stuff your head full of Venice facts so hard that they will come leaking out of your ears.

My favorite sight on the boat ride was the island near Venice that is full of fields with which to grow vegetables for Venice’s best restaurants. They deliver these veggies to the restaurants each and every day. You can really tell the difference if you experience some fine dining while you are in the city, I promise.

3) Cicchetti and Wine Tour of Venice

Have you heard of cicchetti? Well, do not worry if you have not because I had not either on my first trip to Venice. That is why we are going to take this Cicchetti and Wine Tour to experience these delightful treats, which are kind of like Venetian tapas.

Just check rates and availability by going here.

You might not eat all the same cicchetti that I did, but I certainly am sure yours will be delicious.

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

One of the cool things about this tour is that you get to go out on the water. I do not mean that you will really take a gondola. The gondolas in Venice are quite expensive and not worth it if, like me, you are traveling by yourself. However, if you are a group or a couple and want a quintessential romantic Venice experience, go for it!

On this food tour, instead of paying too much for a gondola, we can ride the vaporetto boat and get out on the canals. You will have to let the locals board ahead of you because maybe they are rushing to get to work or home to their children instead of lollygagging about on a cicchetti tour, but you won’t have to wait too long and the views of the canals are worth it.

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

You might be wondering if there are any rules about cicchetti. Like, do cicchetti need to have certain ingredients in them or are there any ingredients that are banned?

As far as I can tell, much like with tapas, there are no cicchetti rules. However, there are certain cicchetti classics, just like some tapas become traditional. I loved the traditional polenta topped with codfish. Since Venice is so aquatic, you get a lot more seafood here than you do in some parts of Italy.

If you are scared of fish, feel free to enjoy some olive tapenade on toast.

If you are a meat lover, I think this prosciutto with pepper will be most pleasing to your belly.

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

Do not worry about running out of drink! There are plenty of fine Italian wines on this tour.

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

Oh, you those those bites were a little too tiny? Well, we’ve got enough sandwiches to satisfy a Venetian elephant.

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

Remember the risotto restaurant from the first food tour? Well, we’re back, and this time we’re trying risotto with beet and Parmesan cheese. (You don’t taste the beets much, but they add a gorgeous color, and the whole plate is fully vegetarian friendly, for my vegetarian readers.)

best Viator tours in Venice Italy

What would you expect for dessert on one of the best Viator tours in Venice Italy than a tiramisu? If you are planning to bet money on what the dessert will be on any Italian food tour, always bet on tiramisu. I do not know who would take you up on that bet, but if you find someone who will, this is a quick and easy tip to make a little extra cash.

Now, if you want to know where to find these amazing dishes and spend much less than you would on your own, just check out the food tour!
