Niagara Falls from Toronto day trip

Morning: Niagara Falls

Your tour will meet fairly early in the morning, so you can have a full day exploring the falls, but it won’t be completely crazy early or anything. There are so many things to see on this Niagara Falls from Toronto day trip, and you won’t want to waste a moment of it.

Everyone on this tour will get to go see the falls and stop for lunch and shopping at Niagara on the Lake later in the day (on your own expense). However, there are a couple of parts of the tour that are optional, and I’ll talk you through those later. I actually suggest doing both because how often are you in Niagara Falls?

But enough administrative stuff! Let’s get ready for fun with…

Approximately Top 5: Niagara Falls from Toronto day trip

1) Skylon Tower

OK, so this is the first extra stop on our Niagara Falls from Toronto day trip. Everyone will stop here to see the outside of Skylon Tower, but you have to pay a bit extra to get in. I say do it!

You’ll get great views of Niagara Falls from high in the sky, and you won’t get these same views when you’re close to the falls. It’s pretty easy because the guide will buy the tickets, and then you just pay him back.

If you don’t want to go to the top of Skylon Tower, the guide will drive you over to the falls while the rest of us hang out at Skylon Tower. But only two people from our group chose to do that.

But just look at the view when you get to the top! So pretty! I was filled to the brim with excitement, and we haven’t even been to the falls yet.

2) See Niagara Falls in a Boat!

So we finally get to Niagara Falls! How exciting! Our lunch break won’t be for a little while, so our guide, whom I will call Eugene, gave us some maple cookies to tide us over. They were cute and free of charge.

Now comes the second extra: getting to ride up close to Niagara Falls on a boat! It used to be called Maid of the Mist, but now that only operates on the American side of the falls. You can skip the boat and just walk along the pathway, but I am not sure why you’d want to do that. Why come all the way to Niagara Falls and not get on the boat?

You have to wait on line to get on the boat, but it moves pretty quickly. And look how close you get! I took this photo of the falls with my own fair hands. It’s best to get a spot on the outside of the boat under an awning so you get good views but with some protection from the spray. Eugene should give you more advice about the best place to stand.

They give you a poncho so you can protect your stuff, which I appreciated. It gets real wet out there!

3) Walk Along Niagara Falls

After the boat trip, you’ll have some time on your own to explore Niagara Falls. Eugene told us that we could get lunch here if we wanted, but he suggested that we wait for Niagara on the Lake. I think he was correct because, despite the name, there’s no Niagara Falls at Niagara on the Lake, and we want to spend all our time admiring this beauty.

Just make sure that you mark very carefully where the bus will meet you because no one wants to be late and hold up the whole bus.

I suggest walking down to the falls, about as far as you can see in my photo. You’ll definitely have enough time for that, even if you stop to take pictures. Don’t miss the plaque marking the spot where the famous Table Rock once stood. (It has long since collapsed.)

4) Niagara Whirlpool

The next few stops before Niagara on the Lake are much shorter, but they allow us to experience some of the other gorgeous natural features and charming man-made attractions in this area.

On the way, Eugene entertained us by telling us Niagara Falls stories and trivia. He literally told us the story of every single person who went over Niagara Falls in a barrel. (This is illegal and dangerous; please don’t do it.)

Our first picture stop on the Niagara Falls from Toronto day trip was at the famous Niagara Whirlpool. What a groovy natural phenomenon.

There’s not much to do here except watch the whirlpool go, but that’s fascinating enough. Tourists who are traveling on their own steam can go up in the Whirlpool Aero Car, but we won’t have time for that.

5) The Floral Clock

This was only the second floral clock I had seen in my life; the first one was in Geneva. Apparently this floral clock gets photographed almost as much as Niagara Falls. That’s according to the sign posted next to the floral clock, but I find that hard to believe. I think it might be floral clock propaganda.

They change the design each season, which I guess means that you could come four times a year and see a different design each time. I wonder if there are people out there who do that? If you’re reading this and you go see the floral clock every year, please let me know about it.

There’s also a restroom here in case you need a break, but that’s not as exciting as a floral clock.

6) Living Water Wayside Chapel

Our final photo stop on our Niagara Falls from Toronto day trip was this teeny tiny little church. When I say teeny tiny, I mean it! Just look at the size of that thing!

toronto niagara falls day trip

It doesn’t really look any bigger when you step inside. Be patient waiting on line because everyone on the bus will want to get this photo.

At the same stop is a cute little farmer’s market where you can buy local produce and products made with produce. They have ice cream too, but there might not be enough time to wait on line. I bought some of their homemade peach jam, and it tasted delicious when I got it home.

Afternoon: Niagara on the Lake

Niagara on the Lake is a quaint Ontario town and the perfect little stopping point for people visiting Niagara Falls. You can tell that they know they’re a tourist destination because the prices in some of the stores are quite high.

However, that doesn’t mean that an afternoon at Niagara on the Lake can’t be perfectly charming if you know what to do and where to go. There’ll be plenty of time for exploring this town’s charms, like the historic Prince of Wales Hotel which you can see in my photo above. But first, lunch! You must be starving.

Three Fun Facts: Niagara on the Lake

toronto niagara falls day trip
1) OK, What was that about lunch?

Ah, if you’re anything like me, you must be starving at this point. We only have a limited amount of time in Niagara on the Lake, and we’re having a large dinner, so I suggest stopping for a quick bite at Gyros on the Lake. It’s affordable and delicious. (I suggest the beef and lamb gyro.)

There’s even seating if you’re lucky enough to get there when it’s not too crowded. Since we’re getting a late lunch, that might well be the case. Plus, you get bonus points if you pronounce the word gyro correctly. (It’s yee-ro.) The man who came in after I did pronounced it “Jye-ro” and I chuckled on the inside.

2) What about dessert?

Glad you asked! Niagara on the Lake seems to have an astonishing amount of ice cream shops for a small town. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen so many concentrated in one spot. I guess that’s how you know that you’re in a popular summer tourist destination.

I can’t guarantee that I picked the best ice cream spot because I only tried one. However, I was extremely happy with my scoop of gelato from Alia’s Gelato and Cafe. I chose the Banana Presley, which was made with peanut butter, banana, and bacon, like Elvis’s favorite sandwich. If you like sweet and salty, this is the gelato for you.

3) What else is there to do in Niagara on the Lake?

Well, of course there is shopping. As I mentioned, some of the stores are over-priced, but not all of them. And anyway, if you’re happy with the price that you paid for something, then it isn’t overpriced.

My favorite store was Art Space 106, which is a gallery featuring artists from all over Canada, especially Ontario. I got a cool print by a First Nations artist and a pair of earrings made out of glass by a local glassblower. The very nice man at the gallery told me how to store them so they won’t break. Much appreciated, Mr. Gallery Man!

I also loved the quaint Apothecary Museum, which is a restoration of a real apothecary that existed in Niagara on the Lake back in the 19th century.

It was so cool to see how Canadians got their medicine in the days before CVS and Walgreens. (Actually, I’m American, so those are the chains that are near me. Where do Canadians get their amazing free medicine today? Is it Tim Horton’s?)

24 Hour Tip

Those are all the secrets of the tour that I can share for now. You will have to take the tour for yourself to find the rest.

Evening: Dinner at Alouette

Alo is one of the top fine dining restaurants in Toronto, but it can be impossible to get a reservation. Fortunately, we have the option of going to the very chic bistro Alouette, which is the more cazh partner to Alo. You still definitely need to make reservations in advance here, but it’s not as hard to get a table at Alouette as it is at Alo.

I recommend starting with one of their creative cocktails, like the Rockford Peach above, which looks like an adult milkshake and tastes like a peach flavored gin fizz. I simply couldn’t pass it up once I noticed the reference to A League of Their Own.

I think the cocktail might have gone to my head slightly because my pictures got progressively blurrier over the course of the evening. However, it was worth it.

It’s nice to know that Canadian bistro classics are pretty much the same as American bistro classics. I mean, we both stole the whole concept from the French, no? I’m not sure the French serve many iceberg wedge salads like the one I had at Alouette.

It was topped with avocado, chive cream, and wild rice, so I was already getting full by the time I was done. I guess the wild rice is what makes it Canadian.

For the main course, I chose Alouette’s special burger topped with Beaufort cheese. I had never heard of this cheese before dining at Alouette, but it’s just a fancy Swiss cheese from the Alps. Infinitely better than those shards of Swiss one finds at my local Morton Williams grocery store.

Where do Canadians do for grocery shopping instead of Morton Williams? Tim Horton’s?

toronto niagara falls day trip

I warned you that the pictures were getting blurry! Nothing goes better for dessert after a burger than a big ole slice of lemon meringue. Look at the flawless tufts on that meringue! I almost hated to eat it, but then I definitely did eat it.

After that, I took one more incredibly blurry photo and dreamed the happy sleep of a girl who just drank a whole Rockford Peach. I hope you do likewise!

Where to Stay?

Toronto is a large city with many different neighborhoods. However, you’ll still want to pick a central location in a safe and convenient neighborhood within walking distance of the main attractions. I personally preferred staying in downtown Toronto because it was near the main attractions like the CN Tower.

That’s why I recommend the One King West. It has a perfectly convenient location within walking distance of some of the most popular Toronto attractions. My room was clean, cozy, large, and comfortable. The staff was extremely helpful, and it was close to tons of great places to eat.
