Greetings, Internet Stranger, and welcome to a perfect Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary. Disney Hollywood Studios used to kind of be the redheaded stepchild of the Disney parks. Magic Kingdom is the legendary park, Epcot has all the food and festivals, Animal Kingdom has real, live animals, and Hollywood Studios…is also a theme park.

But it seems like Disney has decided to focus on putting attractions related to its newest properties, like Pixar and Star Wars, at Hollywood Studios, and keeping the classic feature film animation at the Magic Kingdom.

Now, Star Wars and Pixar films tend to be just a leeee-tle bit popular, so this seemed like a smart bet on Disney’s part. Now Disney Hollywood Studios is a lava hot ticket.

Then get ready to join me for a perfect Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary! We’re going to have an absolute blast, Star Wars style!

Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary

Morning: Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Disney started rolling out their Star Wars attractions fairly slowly. At first, there was just Star Wars, which you can find in another Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary. Then they added this entire Star Wars land, called Galaxy’s Edge, which is pretty fabulous. I’m not even a massive Star Wars fan–I haven’t seen most of the new movies–and I was wowed by the design.

These rides are as popular as Queen Amidala, so plan ahead! You might want to buy a Lightning Lane pass for Rise of the Resistance because the line was so long that I could feel myself aging into Emperor Palpatine as I stood there.

But don’t let the long lines stop you from experiencing the magic of Galaxy’s Edge! It truly is one of the most amazing theme park rides in the world. Let’s head out on our Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary and learn…

Three Fascinating Facts: Galaxy’s Edge

Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary
1) What’s the most popular ride?

I’m pretty sure it’s Rise of the Resistance, which has a line so long that you’d think it was a rainbow and there was a leprechaun giving away gold at the end. In this ride, you take on the role of fighters against the empire, and it’s one of the coolest theme park rides I have ever experienced.

One reason is that the actors from the newer Star Wars films like John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Adam Driver reprise their roles for the scenes shown during the ride.

But the main reason is that there are actual Disney cast members playing soldiers for the Empire that lead you around the ride. And they ad lib and it’s actually funny!

As we were taking photos of the cast members in their costumes after they “captured” us, one sneered, “Yes, yes, document your failure.” I bet he says that line a lot, but I am not used to Disney cast members getting so snarky with me.

On top of that, one of them tried to convince a little boy to join the Empire, and he blurted out, “I will NEVER join the Dark Side,” and his little brother chirped back, “Well, I will!” So it’s good for that family to know that if they’re ever in trouble, the baby of the family is definitely selling them out.

2) Are there other rides in Galaxy’s Edge?

Sure! The other ride, as of this writing, is called Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. This is a great ride to try after Rise of the Resistance because it has a single rider line that moves very quickly, so if you are solo like I am, you’ll go through in a breeze.

As seems pretty obvious from the name, during Smuggler’s Run you take on the role of a smuggler…smuggling…goods. The plot isn’t really the point. This ride is a flying simulator, so each rider is assigned a different role.

All you have to do is press the right button when the disembodied robot voice tells you to. Pretty easy, and I don’t think Disney will let you crash the spaceship and die in a fiery inferno, so you’re all good.

3) Where Should I Eat?

So, I don’t actually recommend eating breakfast on your Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary at Galaxy’s Edge. Especially if you get to enter the park early for Extra Magic Hours because you are a resort guest or Miley Cyrus, I suggest running right away to the Trolley Car Cafe in Hollywood Boulevard near the entrance.

They serve Starbucks coffee drinks, and I recommend their flaky sausage roll. Sit outside, people watch along “Hollywood Boulevard”, and get ready for the fun to begin. Just be warned that if you wait too long to get your coffee, the Trolley Car Cafe will get crowded and you’ll have to wait an age before your first ride.

For lunch, stay in Galaxy’s Edge and stop at Ronto Roasters. (No one would tell me what a Ronto is. Is a Ronto doing the roasting or is it being roasted? This is an important distinction, especially if you are the Ronto.)

I placed my order through my app, explored Galaxy’s Edge, and then hurried back when the app told me my food was ready. It couldn’t have been easier.

The big order here is the Ronto wrap, which is filled with pork, sausage, and–I assume–Rontos. It is satisfying and meaty and will keep you full until dinner. They do also have plant-based wraps if you are vegetarian, but I have never eaten one, so I cannot speak to its quality.

Don’t get dessert at Ronto Roasters. Instead, head to the Milk Stand, where you can blue or green milk, just like they have in the Star Wars movies. (It’s coconut-rice milk, with no dairy at all.)

And if you are over 21 and have ID, I suggest getting yours spiked with either rum or tequila. It will make standing on those long lines this afternoon a little more fun.

Afternoon: Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard

Yup, we’ll devote the afternoon of our Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary to the two boulevards: Hollywood and Sunset. Technically, we were already at Hollywood Boulevard earlier on this day when we hit up the Trolley Car Cafe. But that was just for breakfast, so I say that doesn’t count.

Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard are home to three of the most popular rides at Hollywood Studios, so we’ll be spending a lot of time on this Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary standing on line.

Bring a book or download some movies onto your phone, and you should be just fine as we take on…

Approximately Top 5: Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary

Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary
1) Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is located in Disney’s replica of the Los Angeles landmark Grauman’s Chinese Theater. The original Chinese Theater is already a fantasy of what a Chinese movie palace would look like, and this is a fantasy version of the original theater. It’s like a simulacrum of a simulacrum.

While you wait on line for the ride, check out the handprints and signatures of big stars.

I think it’s a little strange that someone would fake Suzanne Somers’ autograph and handprints in the Year of Our Lord 2023, but the world is full of strange things.

The ride itself is a wow, especially if you like classic animation. You really feel like you’ve been sucked into a Mickey and Minnie cartoon–it’s almost like the wonderful short Get a Horse coming to life before your very eyes! Definitely worth the wait.

2) Carrot Cake Cookie

If you’re jonesing for a snack at this point, one of my faves can be found at the Trolley Car Cafe. I assume this is a healthy snack because it has carrots in it? Like, the carrots just cancel out all the calories in the cookie.

As usual, I thank Disney Food Blog for suggesting the carrot cake cookie to me. I get all my best Disney food tips from them.

3) Shopping

Hollywood Boulevard is the main shopping area at Hollywood Studios, and you can find basically any Disney themed merchandise you’d like here.

A lot of the shops here sell more high-end or limited edition Disney goods, which makes sense because it looks like this is imitating a glam shopping street in Los Angeles like Rodeo Drive, more than the actual Hollywood Boulevard, which looks kind of sketch.

The nice thing about shopping at Disney is that the cast members will never try to bug you or push a product on you like they would at an actual store. Just browse as much as you like! I promise no one cares as long as you don’t try shoplifting.

4) Rock N Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith

I don’t fully understand why the Rock N Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith is in a Disney theme park. What exactly does Aerosmith have to do with Disney? Did they secretly cover the Mary Poppins soundtrack? Are the lyrics of “Love in an Elevator” really appropriate for an audience of children? I’d love someone to explain this to me.

But even though the coaster makes no sense, it’s still a blast. Be sure to get on the single rider line if you can, to save yourself a bunch of time. Enjoy the opening movie, in which indie actress Illeana Douglas plays Aerosmith’s manager. (I seemed to be the only person on line who was excited to see her, so I guess the other guests were not fans of the movie To Die For.)

The ride itself is a speedy dark ride, and one of the biggest thrills in all Disney. It’s actually quite fast; my bag got so shook up that my phone accidentally called 911. (Not a joke.) You’ll also enjoy the Aerosmith soundtrack as you zip along in the dark. (“Love in a roller coaster! Living it up while we’re going down!)

5) Tower of Terror

OK, this is actually my favorite ride at Hollywood Studios because I LOVE The Twilight Zone. My mother and I used to watch the Twilight Zone marathon on the Science Fiction channel every year on New Year’s Day when I was growing up. (I come from a long line of geeks.)

The premise of this ride is that you are entering another dimension. A a dimension not only of sight and sound, but of mind. As the line to get on the ride proceeds, you’ll learn about the history of this creepy, haunted hotel, which looks like a run-down version of the Beverly Hills Hotel or the Chateau Marmont in LA.

The ride itself is a drop ride, not a roller coaster. You’ll get strapped in, taken to the top, and then dropped down, down, down. If this sounds like it will be too tough on your stomach, you can skip this ride, but I think it’s tons of fun.

Evening: Dinner at the Brown Derby

There was once a restaurant in Los Angeles called The Brown Derby where all the stars used to go. It closed down in the 1980s; the only time I have ever seen the actual Brown Derby was in a scene in the very strange Tom Hanks-Dan Ackroyd comedy Dragnet.

However, the Brown Derby at Hollywood Studios is a near-perfect replica of the original, so dining here is just like going back in time–to the 80s! I don’t think they had glow-in-the-dark ice cubes at the real Brown Derby, but the 80s were a strange time, so maybe they did.

Don’t miss the sketches of classic Hollywood actors on the walls, just like they had at the original Brown Derby. See how many you can identify! I think I see Oscar-winning character actor Charles Coburn up there–that’s a real deep cut.

I started with their seasonal oyster and Brie soup. Shellfish + melted cheese! What Hollywood decadence is this? Just ignore the weird glow in my picture. That is coming from the plastic ice cube in my cocktail.

The must order dish at the Brown Derby is the world-famous Cobb salad. The original, real, actual Brown Derby claimed to have invented this salad with leftovers. The salad is made with eggs, bacon, chicken, avocado, blue cheese, and more yummies, all chopped into a frenzy.

You can get different proteins on top of your salad. I recommend the shrimp because they’re light and refreshing and there’s also a ton of protein in the salad already. But you don’t need to get anything added to the salad if you don’t want.

For dessert, get the grapefruit cake, which is also a Brown Derby original recipe. It’s tart and refreshing and not too heavy, so it seems like the sort of thing a glamorous movie star would eat in the 1930s.

You’ll feel like Carole Lombard when Clark Gable was proposing to her at the Brown Derby–only minus the diamond ring and everything.

24 Hour Treat: Wonderful World of Animation

After dinner, head for the Grauman’s Chinese Theater, where there will be a projection show called Wonderful World of Animation, a perfect moment for concluding our Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary.

This show honors the entire history of Disney and Pixar animation, and you can see how much the styles have changed over the years. It’s especially touching when they bust out the line, “It all started with a mouse.”

I often think about how Walt Disney was a terrible student and no one thought he would amount to anything, and he ended up becoming a cryogenically-frozen billionaire who brought joy to children all over the world. Don’t be afraid to live your dreams!

Where Should I Stay?

As a solo-traveling non-driver, I recommend staying at one of the Disney resorts for your Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary because the transportation to and from the parks to the hotel is so convenient. I like to stay at one of the Port Orleans hotels because I am ride or die for The Princess and the Frog.

You can see which Disney resort hotels are available when you visit by clicking here. This search engine will help you find the perfect choice.

In order to get the most out of your Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary, I suggest you get coffee at your hotel, hop on the free shuttle, and arrive at Disney in time to enter the park when it opens. If you’re able to get in even earlier for Extra Magic Hours for Disney resort guests, so much the better.

However, you don’t have to stay at a Disney resort if you’d rather be more independent. Orlando has thousands upon thousands of excellent hotels.

Click here to see many excellent hotels available near Disney.

This search engine will help you find the most affordable and convenient hotel during your Disney Hollywood Studios one day itinerary. With tons of options to choose from, I’m sure you’ll find something for your schedule and budget.
