1) Old and New Delhi Tour

If you’re a new visitor to Delhi, you might get a little mixed up about the difference between Old Delhi and New Delhi. My understanding is that New Delhi is the shiny new-er capital of India, whereas Old Delhi is the historic city.

Old Delhi was founded by Shah Jahan, who was once the Muslim emperor of India. When Shah Jahan became emperor, the capital of India was in Agra, where the Taj Mahal is located, but Shah Jahan moved it to Delhi.

24 Hour Tip

I strongly recommend finding a guide to help you get around Delhi because it can be rather overwhelming. For this itinerary, you’ll want an excellent tour that can take you around Old and New Delhi.

You can book this excellent tour easily by clicking here.

We’re going to start this tour in Old Delhi and then move on to New Delhi. I can’t guarantee that you’ll see everything I saw, but I’m sure it will be similar enough. And you’ll get to experience the excitement of Delhi by riding around in a rickshaw. Perhaps you’ll even make friends with some of the local cows moseying down the street as well.

24 hours in delhi

The first stop on your tour will almost definitely be the Jama Masjid. This is one of the largest mosques in all of India, so you definitely have to visit during your time in Delhi. This mosque is also special for a few other reasons. It was built by Shah Jahan himself!

This mosque is also special because it hosts the noon prayers on Friday, which is a sacred day for Muslims. If you want to visit this special place, you need to be prepared with some rules. First, if you want to take photos, you need to pay a few rupees extra for a camera permit. I personally think it’s worth it.

24 hours in delhi

Also, be prepared to take your shoes off before entering the mosque. This is required for everyone. I’ve been to mosques, like the one in Istanbul, where they give you socks when they take your shoes, but they don’t do this here, so be prepared with some socks of your own.

24 hours in delhi

If you want to pay extra, you can climb a minaret, but I didn’t do this. There was enough to entertain me and my friends with all the cute cats roaming the mosque! Apparently cats were special to the prophet Mohammed.

24 hours in delhi

Our next stop will be at a Sikh place of worship, which is also known as a Gurdwara. To go inside here, you also have to take off your shoes, but on top of that you need to keep your hair covered.

I usually try to travel with a little head scarf just in case of rules like this, so I was prepared. My scarf didn’t cover my hair entirely, but it was still totally fine with the Gurdwara.

24 hours in delhi

Do not worry if you don’t practice the Sikh religion! Everyone is welcome to come and sit inside the Gurdwara, whether or not they are Sikh. Also, men and women were allowed to sit together.

There will be chanting inside the Gurdwara, so just go in and get ready to enjoy the peaceful experience.

24 hours in delhi

I wish I could give you advice about how to meditate, but I am actually the worst person at meditating in the entire world. Seriously, there have been countless studies done, and I am by far the worse.

However, even if you are also bad at meditating, you can enjoy the pretty little details around the room. (Sadly, the Gurdwara appeared to be entirely cat free.)

24 hours in delhi

Next, we’ll head over to New Delhi, where we’ll actually be able to experience some nature. My favorite part of the tour was Sunder Nursery, which was founded back in the 1500s. Isn’t it stunning?

Our guide told us that this garden was designed to look like paradise because Muslims have faith that heaven will be a garden. There are hundreds of trees in this nursery, so you’ll never get bored here.

24 hours in delhi

The nursery changed under British rule of India because they turned the garden into a place for growing experimental plants. After the British left, the nursery became quite dilapidated, but it was restored and reopened in 2018.

It wasn’t crowded when we visited, and I hope it will remain this way for you as well!

24 Hour Tip

That’s our final stop on one of the best guided tours in Delhi, and I hope I convinced you how amazing it is. Now all you need to do is head along and book a reservation for yourself!

2) Taj Mahal Tour

I know that you are probably thinking that the Taj Mahal isn’t in Delhi. And you’d be right! However, a trip to the Taj Mahal makes an excellent day trip from Delhi, which is why I say that this is one of the best guided tours in Delhi.

You can take a special high speed train from Delhi to Agra and get the whole trip done in just twelve hours. What could be cooler than that?

day of the best Agra things to do

There are many things you need to keep in mind before visiting the Taj Mahal. The first is that the Taj Mahal is extremely well guarded. It’s under tight security. I mean, we would expect nothing less from one of the wonders of the modern world.

On top of that, you can’t bring any large bags into the Taj Mahal. Leave your backpacks and whatnot at home. Do just like me and bring something you can carry in your hand. You’ll thank me later.

You can take photos of most of the Taj Mahal, but not in the mausoleum, which is where Shah Jahan and his beloved wife are lain to rest. However, the lighting is quite terrible in that part of the tomb, so you will not even want to take pictures there.

You also need to take your shoes off in the mausoleum, just as you would in a mosque. Wear socks to keep your tootsies clean!

day of the best Agra things to do

Once you’ve taken care of the boring stuff, be prepared to experience the majesty of the Taj Mahal. You’ll hear all about its backstory on the tour, but I’m going to tell you some of my favorite parts anyway. The Taj Mahal was the lovechild of the emperor Shah Jahan.

Shah Jahan was unusual for an emperor in that he was madly in love with his wife, the gorgeous Mumtaz Mahal. In those days, a Shah was allowed to have all the ladies he wanted, but Shah Jahan just wanted to be a good husband. One could say that he was the original Wife Guy.

Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal had 14 kids together, so I guess they enjoyed each other’s company. But sadly, Mumtaz died while giving birth to the fourteenth child, leaving Shah Jahan devastated. That’s why he had the Taj Mahal built, as a tribute to his everlasting love for his wife.

day of the best Agra things to do

There are about a grillion legends about the Taj Mahal, and some of them are true and some are Very False. One of the fake stories is that Shah Jahan was going to build a black mausoleum for himself to match the white mausoleum for his wife.

This is fake news. Shah Jahan couldn’t have afforded a project that large out of black marble. The Taj Mahal itself is expensive enough.

day of the best Agra things to do

If you’d like a more gory story, get ready to hear this one. Some say that Shah Jahan had the hands of all the builders of the Taj Mahal chopped off. That way they could never build another Taj Mahal or anything as beautiful again.

But this isn’t true either. Shah Jahan wasn’t some psychopath who liked to cut people’s hands off! The builders of the Taj Mahal went to live happy, long lives, at least as much as could be expected back in the 17th century with dysentery and scurvy and what not.

24 Hour Tip

That’s it for our Delhi day trip of Agra and the Taj Mahal! I promise that I didn’t share even half of the fun tips and secrets of Agra that I learned with my wonderful local guide. If you want to experience those for yourself…

3) Explore More of Old and New Delhi!

I have already introduced you to a tour of Old and New Delhi earlier in this post. However, you might be interested in having a few more options when choosing your tour company, so I have another tour of Old and New Delhi to recommend.

On this tour, you’ll see many of the same sights that you could see on the other tour, but since it is a private tour, you might also see some different things. I want to give you an impression of the kinds of wonders and beauties that you can enjoy and experience while on one of the best guided tours in Delhi.

So get ready for a day of fun and adventure in India’s capital city!

You’ll definitely get to experience a Sikh Gudwara on this tour, so I wanted to let you know a little bit about Sikhism, which is different from Islam or Hinduism, which are the two other major religions in India.

Sikhs worship one god, which makes them monotheists. You’ll see male Sikhs in Delhi, and they are noticeable because they are required to wear certain symbols. They have to grow their hair out and keep it under a turban. They also wear a special dagger called a kirpan.

Some countries have rules against wearing a kirpan, because it is a weapon, but most allow it for religious reasons.

24 hours in delhi

If you have the opportunity to visit a langar on your tour, you simply must! This is definitely one of the most interesting places to visit on a Sikh Gurdwara. The langar is a kitchen that gives free food to anyone in need. (The food is all vegetarian, but Indian vegetarian food is amazing.)

When you sit at a langar, you have to sit according to assigned seating. That means that if you are a billionaire and come to a langar, you might be seated next to a destitute person. That’s the way the wheel turns.

On the tour, you won’t get to eat at the langar, but you might get to watch them make chapati bread. You might even get to roll out some of the chapati yourself! I promise that it will be an experience that you won’t forget.

24 hours in delhi

We’ll mosey on back to New Delhi to see one of the most beautiful tombs in the city. It’s such a stunning place to explore that I almost don’t want to give you any background information.

But then I remember that I love being a nerd and geeking out on trivia, so I shall do my best.

This is the Jamali Kamali Mosque and Tomb. I know if might be a little confusing, but Jamali and Kamali are two different people. Jamai was a Sufi saint and poet, which seems romantic and cool, if I were a 16th century kind of girl.

24 hours in delhi

Sufis are mystics. If you know anything about Dervishes, the whirling kind, those are Sufi mystics. I don’t know if it’s because he had a special connection to the spirit world, but according to our guide, some people say that Jamali’s tomb is haunted.

That seems a little creepy, but is anyone actually scared by a ghost of a poet? What is he going to do, kill you with metaphor? I doubtful.

As for Kamali, no one knows who he is. I’m not making a joke. He is officially listed as unknown. I’ve decided to make up an awesome backstory for him, like that he was a leader of war elephants who drove the British out of India. People shouldn’t be forgotten like that.

24 hours in delhi

I hope you find the tomb of Muhammad Quli Khan just as impressive. But Khan himself didn’t have so many achievements. He was mostly famous for being the brother of a famous general.

I guess this would be like if we had a big monument to the brother of President/General Eisenhower back in the United States. Did Eisenhower even have a brother? I’m honestly not sure and too lazy to look it up.

24 hours in delhi

This tomb is mostly famous, not because of the whole brother of a general thing, but because it was occupied by the British. A small English nobleman named Sir Thomas Metcalfe turned it into his summer house.

That’s even less impressive than being the brother of a famous general! Don’t go stealing people’s tombs and turning them into summer homes! Didn’t your mother teach you any manners?

That’s all of Delhi that I can share with you for now, but I hope you can see why I think this is one of the best guided tours in Delhi.
