Greetings, Internet Stranger, and welcome to all the best tips about the Cape Town weather South Africa. Cape Town is one of the most beautiful and popular tourist destinations in the entire world, and I have been there more than once. I wrote this article because I want you to have an amazing time in Cape Town as well.

But one of the trickiest things you will need to know about visiting Cape Town is how to handle the Cape Town weather South Africa. In Cape Town, the weather changes frequently, and it can get super windy, so you will want to know how to handle that.

Cape Town Weather South Africa Tips

1) Cape Town Weather South Africa January

If you are coming from the Northern hemisphere, like I am, you will probably be used to thinking of January as a winter month. However, since Cape Town is in the Southern hemisphere, January for them is like July for us. Get ready for warmth and sunshine, baby!

The average high temperature is 83 degrees Fahrenheit and the average low temperature is 63 degrees. (I’m American and Celsius confuses me, so all temperatures will be in Fahrenheit. Sorry, not sorry!)

In terms of rain, you don’t have to worry that much in January. There are only about three rainy days in the month. Of course, since South Africa has had some water shortages, it might be nice if that number would increase. But I’ve been in Cape Town during more than one January, and I have not seen much rain.

I would personally suggest keeping an eye out for the wind in Cape Town, including in January. I like to wear skirts, and I got in the habit of wearing tap shorts until my skirt, just because the random gusts of wind were driving me nuts.

If you also like those skirts, bring along some tap pants! This is the kind of Cape Town weather South Africa travel tip you won’t find on some other blog!

2) Cape Town Weather South Africa February

As you can probably imagine, the weather in Cape Town in February is not that different from the weather in Cape Town in January. Both of them are sunny summer months.

The average high temperature in Cape Town in February is 84 degrees Fahrenheit, as opposed to the 83 degrees in January. Oh no! That’s such a big difference! Whatever shall we do! The low temperature is exactly the same. So whatever you feel like you need to bring for South Africa in January, you can also use for Cape Town in February.

I never personally felt like it got that crazy hot in Cape Town while I was there because of all the cool breezes, and you are often by the water. However, it’s really sunny, so bring that sunscreen! Your skin will thank me later.

Some people say that February is the best month to visit Cape Town because the weather is just as good as it is in December and January, but there are fewer crowds because so many people some down for the holidays, especially New Year’s, which is an absolutely wild party in Cape Town.

However, it is possible that New Year’s Eve and big crowds are not your jam, so you might like to come in February instead. And think how romantic it could be to experience a more warm weather Valentine’s Day with your sweetheart!

3) Cape Town Weather South Africa March

OK, we are getting into a slightly cooler month, but not by much. The high average temperature is 81 degrees and the low average temperature is 61 degrees Not Celsius.

But that kind of makes sense, doesn’t it? After all, for those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere, September is not really that much colder than August for us, sometimes. And we are really easing into fall here at the end of the month.

You are still not going to get much rain here in Cape Town in May. It’s a tragically dry city! If it were to rain, that would be a very good thing.

In short, March is a great time of year to visit Cape Town if you hate crowds and you love fabulous warm weather. If you can swing the long flight, it could make a great spring break destination this time of year too.

4) Cape Town Weather South Africa April

OK, now we are really getting into the Cape Town weather in fall. You can naturally expect the temperatures to drop a bit, although it will not be a crazy amount.

The average high temperature in Cape Town in April is 77 degrees and the average low temperature in April is 59 degrees. So if you are going to be out and about in the evening in Cape Town in April, I would definitely suggest bringing that light jacket.

The rains also start increasing in Cape Town around this time of year. Instead of 2 average days of rain per month, you can expect about six average days of rain per month. Yay rain! Just make sure you always bring an umbrella with you, and you will be just fine with the Cape Town weather South Africa in April.

If you like the beaches and swimming in the ocean, just be aware that the waters around Cape Town are going to start to get colder in April, so you might not enjoy swimming around this time of year quite as much as you would in the summer.

5) Cape Town Weather South Africa May

May is my birth month, so get ready to celebrate my birthday in style in Cape Town. (My birthday is not recognized as a national holiday in any country around the world…yet. But that could change at any moment, so stay tuned!

The temperature drops even more this month, as you might expect because we are fully into fall. In fact, June is the first month of South African winter, so you might think of May in Cape Town as like the northern hemisphere November.

Does that mean that they celebrate Thanksgiving in May in South Africa? That would be cool because then I could eat pumpkin pie and stuffing on my birthday. But then I just remembered that they do not celebrate American Thanksgiving in South Africa, so that whole plan is canceled.

Back to the temperature! The average high temperature in South Africa in May is 72 degrees, and the average low temperature in May is 56 degrees. So that is a little more moderate than the weather in fall in my hometown of New York City because the average high temperature in New York City in November is 55 degrees.

The rain increases even more, with an average number of nine rainy days. So you can just have that umbrella on hand at all times and you will be fine enjoying the Cape Town weather South Africa in May.

6) Cape Town Weather South Africa June

At last! We get to South African winter and the Cape Town weather South Africa in June. The weather is going to get even colder, but still not cold enough to be considered winter weather in a place like the north east of the United States.

The average high temperature in Cape Town in June is 68 degrees, and the average low temperature in Cape Town in June is 53 degrees. That sounds like perfectly cromulent weather to me, but is it as lovely as the weather in Cape Town in December or January? Not quite.

The rainfall in June is slightly higher than it is in May, but it now goes up to ten days a month, on average, which is as much as the average rainfall in Cape Town ever gets.

Just to compare to my hometown of New York City, we don’t ever have an average monthly rainfall that is that high, but our rainfall never gets as low as it gets in Cape Town in the summer either.

7) Cape Town Weather South Africa July

And we’ve come more than halfway throughout the year! Congratulations to us! I mentioned that January in Cape Town was kind of like Northern Hemisphere July, so July in Cape Town is like Northern Hemisphere January.

But keep in mind that the temperatures in Cape Town in July are still not frosty! The temperature is pretty similar to the temperatures in Cape Town in June. We’ve got average highs of 68 degrees, and we’ve got average lows of 52 degrees.

The rainfall remains about an average of 10 rainy days per month. This is still pretty nice weather! This is like New York City spring or fall. So I know that not as many people visit Cape Town in the winter, but I think it’s worth giving a shot.

8) Cape Town Weather South Africa August

Spoiler alert! Much like the weather in January and February in the northeast of the United States is pretty similar, the weather in Cape Town in July and August is pretty similar.

That’s not to imply that there is going to be SNOW in Cape Town in July and August because with average low temperatures of 53 degrees Fahrenheit, you are not going to see that much snowfall.

Does it ever snow in Cape Town? Yup! Snow Africa does not get a lot of snow, but remember that there’s the giant and stunning Table Mountain in the middle of Cape Town, and at higher elevations, you are going to see some snow.

August is definitely not the big month for tourism in South Africa, so if you do go and prepare for the winter Cape Town weather South Africa, you might just have a blast!

9) Cape Town Weather South Africa September

OK, now we are getting into South African spring. The temperature is going to rise, but not by a huge amount. The average high temperature is 70 degrees, and the average low temperature is 55 degrees.

Actually, that weather sounds really nice! Let’s all go down to Cape Town in September and enjoy the mild weather!

The rainfall is actually going to go down a bit to an average of 8 days per month. The first month of spring in New York is always super rainy, so I was surprised to hear that.

10) Cape Town Weather South Africa October

The weather gets a pretty big bump in temperature. We’re going all the way up to average high temperatures of 76 degrees, so get ready to think about sunscreen and beautiful spring weather.

The average low temperature does not increase as much, it only goes up to 58 degrees, so do not throw away that low jacket.

The rainfall also drops a noticeable bit, down to an average of five days per month. I guess spring is a drier season in Cape Town. And that’s all you need to know about the Cape Town weather South Africa October.

cape town weather south africa

11) Cape Town Weather South Africa November/December

Are you ready for some slightly warmer weather? Then prepare yourself for Cape Town in November and December! We are going all the way up to temperatures of 78 to 81 degrees!
