Best Tours in Kona Hawaii

big island in a day tour

1) Big Island in a Day Tour

This tour is the most popular tour from Kona, and it will show you the entire Big Island and all the most famous attractions. That’s why I say it is one of the best tours in Kona Hawaii. If you want to see as much as possible in one fabulous day, then this is the tour for you!

Check rates and availability right here!

This tour lasts for 11 hours, so it really is an all day tour. I would suggest not making any dinner reservations because there’s no way to be sure exactly when you will be back. (You will definitely be able to get dinner back in Kona, and you won’t need a reservation in many places.)

But enough about dinner, let’s get to the tour! This tour will take you to a coffee plantation, where you can sample some amazing Hawaiian coffee and learn how it is grown. (You can buy some coffee as well, but there is no pressure.)

You will also be able to relax on a black sand beach and hopefully see some famous green sea turtles. At the beach, you will get a local lunch, which is included with the tour. Just be sure to notify them in advance if you want a vegetarian lunch.

After the beach, you will be able to head to a real volcano! You shouldn’t have to worry about it erupting, but it is active, so get ready to enjoy watching it burble. You’ll also be able to walk through a lava tube, and I think that alone is worth the price of admission.

Had enough with the black sand beaches and the volcanoes? Then get ready to meet the waterfalls. You’ll do this on the other side of the Big Island, which is often known as the rainy side. You’ll be able to walk around the beautiful Akaka and Rainbow Falls, which will make you feel like you have stepped back in time to the Jurassic Era.

Finally, your guide will drive you back to Kona, showing you some spectacular views along the way. He or she will probably show you some of the famous sights of Kona as well. The perfect end to a perfect day!

2) Kona Food Tour

If you love food, you will definitely agree this is one of the best tours in Kona Hawaii. This tour lasts about three hours, and it will surely give enough food for two meals. (I didn’t really eat breakfast the morning I took the tour, and the tour more than satisfied me for breakfast and lunch.)

Your friendly guide will teach you about all the most delicious foods in Kona and also introduce you to the town’s history and culture. Plus, the tour is very popular, so you will be able to make friends with other tourists while you enjoy the food. For a solo traveler like me, this was especially nice.

I can’t guarantee that you will eat all the same things that I ate on my food tour because sometimes restaurants close or change things, but you can expect to try a variety of foods like seafood chowder, mai tais, poke, more seafood, more booze, and some amazing ice cream. (I told you that it was plenty of food.)

What I can promise is that you will try seven different food stops, and that there will be no more than twelve people on the tour so you can get all your guide’s attention. Also, there will probably be macadamia nuts in at least one dish because this is Hawaii, and they love mac nuts here. Mac nuts and good times, that’s the Hawaiian way.

3) Snorkel Tour

No matter what your level of snorkel experience is, you can find something to love on this amazing snorkel tour of one of the most famous bays in Hawaii. If you love sea creatures, the ocean, lunch, and Hawaiian history, this is the tour for you.

Check rates and availability right here!

This tour lasts for about four hours and will take you to Kealakekua Bay, which is where Captain Cook was killed. It’s also right near where King Kamehameha III was born, so there’s really a lot going on here.

All the snorkel equipment is provided, and you really don’t need to know anything about snorkeling to get started. I went snorkeling for the very first time in Hawaii, and it was super easy and the guides were happy to show me exactly what to do.

You’ll be able to see many amazing sea creatures, including humpback whales if it is the right season. As you could probably tell from my intro, lunch, which will be sandwiches and fruit, is included with the tour. So you do not need to worry about getting anything and you can just relax and enjoy the snorkeling.

One thing to keep in mind is that hotel pick up and drop off is not included, so make sure to get to the meeting place well in advance. Other than that, there is absolutely nothing to worry about! That’s why I say it is one of the best tours in Kona Hawaii.

4) Mauna Kea Summit and Stargazing Tour

Are you ready for a beautiful evening experience? Then you will love this truly unique and magical tour that will help you appreciate why Hawaii is not just famous for its beaches and macadamia nuts, it’s also famous for its amazing stargazing opportunities.

This tour lasts for about eight hours, and be warned that it’s going to get a little chillier than the rest of Hawaii because you will be at higher elevation. But that is not a problem because the tour provides warm clothes AND a warm dinner. Plus, there is cocoa! Truly you will be as snug as a bug at a luau.

The first part of your tour is getting to watch a spectacular sunset from the summit of Mauna Kea. (Yes, Mauna Kea is a real volcano but do not worry at all because it is completely inactive.)

After the sunset, your guide will show you the night sky using high quality telescopes. I personally have always loved watching the stars at a planetarium show, but nothing is going to be as exciting as seeing the stars this close at actual night!

This is the kind of unique experience that most tourists to Hawaii never get to experience. But you are not most tourists, are you Internet Stranger? That is why you are going to love this stargazing tour.

5) Historical Dinner Cruise

Some people might not want an exciting tour that takes you all about the island. Some people would prefer a more relaxing experience that will help them appreciate Kona’s natural beauty. For those people, this will be one of the best tours in Kona Hawaii.

Check rates and availability right here!

This cruise lasts for about three hours. As you can probably guess, hotel pick up and drop off is not provided, but if you are staying in Kona, you will find it pretty easy to get there. Dinner is provided with the cruise, as is one complimentary alcoholic drink.

However, if you want more than one drink, do not worry! They will be happy to take your money and sell you another beverage. That is why this is definitely one of the best tours in Kona Hawaii.

The tour is not some sort of boring affair where you just swan about and stare at the sunset, as nice as that might be. There will also be narration explaining everything that you are looking at, so you will get to know this gorgeous part of the Hawaiian coastline while you enjoy your dinner and cocktails.

If the season is right, you might even be able to see some dolphins. The only thing better than a sunset is a sunset with some dolphins, as my grandmother always used to say. And if the narrated tour is not enough entertainment for you, there is also music and dancing. Get ready to enjoy!

6) Chocolate and Coffee Tour

All the tours I have listed as being the best tours in Kona Hawaii are delightful. But unfortunately, all of them are a little bit expensive as well. If you are looking for a tour that costs much less money, I insist you try this chocolate and coffee tour.

Check rates and availability right here!

In fact, even if you are not on a budget, this tour will be a delightful experience. After all, who does not like chocolate and coffee? Sad, lonely people that’s who. This tour lasts about three hours, which is amazing bang for the buck.

Just keep in mind that the tour is not located in downtown Kona and there is no hotel pick up and drop off included. However, it is just a short drive from downtown Kona to get there, so you can either get an Uber or drive yourself if you are renting a car.

I personally always used Ubers to get to this area and had no trouble. Just keep in mind that it sometimes takes Ubers a while to get to this area, so leave yourself plenty of time after the tour if you are waiting for a rideshare to pick you up.

On the tour, you will learn exactly how the chocolate and coffee are grown and produced. Of course, you will get an opportunity to taste both delicious treats as well. After the tour, you will be able to shop, but there is no pressure to do that.

Where to Stay?

For your what to do in Kona HI day, of course you’re going to want to stay in a hotel in Kona. Unfortunately, these hotels can get to be crazy expensive, especially if you visit during spring vacation, like I did.

That’s why I recommend staying at the Aeolian Ranch. It’s on a gorgeous property with beautiful horses and gardens that you can stroll at your leisure. There’s free coffee and wifi in the morning, so it’s quite convenient. More importantly, it’s actually affordable, so you can save your vacation money for fun stuff like food tours and Hawaiian royal residences.
