Greetings, Internet Stranger, and welcome to the best tours in Johannesburg South Africa! I took several tours when I was in Johannesburg, and I highly recommend doing the same thing when you are in South Africa’s largest city.

While I had a ton of fun in Johannesburg, and I highly recommend visiting, not every neighborhood in the city is safe to walk around. Especially as a solo traveler, it was great to have tour guides to show me the best places to go and give me advice.

That’s where this list of the best tours in Johannesburg comes in! I’ll tell you all my favorite tours, show you everything I did, and help you decide which one will be the tour for you!

1) All Day Tour

If you are looking for one comprehensive tour that will show you all the best places in Johannesburg, then this is the tour for you! It will take you everywhere you want to go, and you’ll also have some great time to explore.

Check rates and availability right here!

The two main attractions on this tour are the Apartheid Museum and Nelson Mandela’s House in Soweto. The admission tickets to both of these tours are included, and I think this alone is worth the price of admission.

At the Apartheid Museum, you will be able to explore this fascinating and sad place on your own and learn about the history of Apartheid in South Africa and how it has ended. You’ll learn about famous South African activists like Nelson Mandela and Steve Biko, but you will learn about less famous people as well.

At Nelson Mandela’s House, you’ll have a guided tour led by one of their docents. You’ll see where Mandela lived with his ex-wife Winnie. (He obviously lived in a much nicer place when he was elected president.)

You’ll also be able to have lunch on the only street in the world that has produced two Nobel Prize winners: Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. The lunch is not included with the tour, but the food is tasty and good value, so make sure you have enough money for lunch.

There are so many more wonderful places in Johannesburg that you will be able to see on this excellent tour, so go right ahead and enjoy!

2) Pilanesberg National Park Safari

Obviously, this tour is not going to take you around Johannesburg, but it leaves from Johannesburg, and going on a safari is a popular activity in Jo’burg.

Check rates and availability right here!

I liked this safari because it is a one day trip, which makes it an easy and fun activity from Johannesburg. You will get a hotel pickup, but it will be fairly early in the morning, so be prepared! Breakfast is not included with the tour, so snag something to eat before you get picked up.

After a longish drive, which will probably include a restroom stop, you will arrive at Pilanesberg. Then you will have a ranger take you on two separate drives around the national park. There’s no guarantee of what you will see because these are wild animals, but I was super happy with what we did get to see.

I spotted zebras, elephants, giraffes, birds, lots of wildebeests, and even a lion from a distance. It was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. Just keep in mind that these are wild animals, so you will not get to pet them. One woman in our group actually complained that she could not pet a zebra! Can you believe that?

Lunch is included with the tour, which is most convenient. Dinner is not included, but do not worry! The driver will get you back to Johannesburg with plenty of time for dinner.

3) Hop on Hop off Bus Tour

If you want the best value out of all the best tours in Johannesburg, then the hop on hop off bus is for you. It’s extremely affordable, and it will take you to all the most famous attractions in the city.

Check rates and availability right here!

When I say that this tour is a great value, I’m not joking. It even offers a free shuttle for pick up if you are staying at certain hotels. However, I just bought my ticket and went to the main office visitor center, and then one of the guides escorted me to the bus. It was easy!

The audio guide provides commentary in eight different languages, so you are not stuck with English. That sounds impressive until you remember that South Africa has eleven official languages.

This tour will take you to famous attractions like Constitution Hill and the Apartheid Museum. It even stops at a casino, which I did not get out and visit. Like all hop on hop off buses, you can get out at any attraction you want to see and then just get on the next bus when it arrives.

If you want, you can add on a two hour walking tour in Soweto, which I definitely recommend. When you’re all done with the tour, you can do some shopping in the mall near the Visitor Center. It will be a great end to a great tour!

4) Soweto Walking Tour

If you’re not as interested in seeing all of Johannesburg and you’d rather just concentrate on Soweto, then I recommend the Soweto walking tour as one of the best tours in Johannesburg.

Check rates and availability right here.

This tour lasts about four hours and lunch is included, so it really is a very reasonable price. If you are interested in South African history, Nelson Mandela, and the people of Johannesburg, you will never forget this tour.

You’ll meet at the Hector Pieterson Museum and learn about who this young man was and the role he played in the Soweto Uprising. You’ll get to visit the Nelson Mandela House as well as Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s house. Remember, these two houses are on the same famous street. Admission to both houses is included with the tour.

You might be wondering about the lunch! It isn’t anything crazy extravagant, a local sandwich, but it’s a sandwich with an interesting and important history, which I will let you learn about when you take the tour.

You might even be able to sample some local beer on the tour, but I cannot promise that. However, I can promise you that your local guide will show you a fascinating time that you will always remember. That’s why it’s one of the best tours in Johannesburg.

5) Lion Park Tour

If you are interested in seeing lions up close and personal but you do not have time to head out on a safari and are looking for a shorter tour, this lion park tour is for you. The tour lasts about five hours, which is a lot less than any safari. You’ll be back at your hotel with plenty of time for a nice dinner.

Check rates and availability right here!

You do not have to worry about getting to the Lion Park because hotel pick up and hotel drop are included with the tour price. You’ll be able to take a one hour safari drive with an expert guide when you get to the park and see lions very nearby!

If you have always dreamed about making friends with a lion, then this is the tour for you! Also, I would be curious to know why that is your dream, but I promise that there is absolutely no judgment here.

They will also take you to Cub World where you can learn about baby lions. What is cuter than a baby lion? They are basically kittens…kittens that grow up to be kings.

As you can probably tell, you’ll spend some time driving from your hotel to the Lion Park, but do not worry that this will be boring! Your local driver will regale you with information about lions and Johannesburg, so the time will be almost as enjoyable as your time with the lions.

6) Taste of Africa Food Tour

Are you interested in trying the amazing variety of South African cuisine? Then you’ll definitely think this is one of the best tours in Johannesburg. This tour lasts for about three hours and will be enough food for two meals. (I am not joking here.)

Check rates and availability right here!

The tour is offered in two different neighborhoods, depending on which neighborhood you select when you book it. You will either get the Yeoville neighborhood or the Maboneng neighborhood. The Yeoville neighborhood has immigrants from all over Africa, so you will get a variety of cuisines here and Maboneng is known for art and culture.

As you can probably tell from my description, you will not only try South African cuisine on this tour. You will also get to try food from places like Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon. That’s why I would call this a one of a kind culinary experience.

You will try at least four different dishes on the tour, and you can also experience a South African beer tasting. (I found South African beer to be quite delicious. IPAs are especially popular here.)

Your guide will be a local guide who really knows the neighborhood and can show you the best South African cuisine. So many people have a stereotypical impression of Johannesburg and are nervous about visiting there, and this tour will help you see Jo’burg at its best.

7) Maboneng Street Art Tour

Up next on our list of the best tours in Johannesburg is a street art tour. This tour is very affordable and will take you to a unique part of Johannesburg. The tour lasts about two hours, so it won’t stop you from doing other things on this day. It will be a creative and delightful experience.

Check rates and availability right here!

This is the kind of tour that shows you a part of a city that you cannot really discover on your own. You won’t know anything about the artists or the stories behind the street art and murals if you go and look around by yourself.

Your local guide will keep you safe and happy as you explore this beautiful neighborhood and learn about its special history. You’ll even get a cute little stop to try a cup of local coffee or tea, which is included with the price of the tour. (If you are a tea lover, South Africa is famous for rooibos tea, but a really good coffee scene has also broken out here as well.)

The thing about any street art tour is that there is no way to guarantee exactly which pieces you will see because street art changes all the time. But the great thing about this tour is that your guide will be very well informed about the local artists, so he or she will help you truly understand the special art you can only find in Maboneng.

Where to Stay?

It’s always important to choose the location of your hotel carefully when you travel, especially if you are a solo traveler, like I am. And this is especially important if you’re enjoying the best tours in Johannesburg because some places in the city are safer for tourists than others.

That’s why I recommend staying at the @sandton Hotel when you are in Johannesburg. The facilities are new and stylish, there’s an extremely helpful 24 hour staff, and the location of the hotel is excellent. No matter where you are going in Johannesburg, you’ll be able to have an Uber come to meet you here. (And Uber in South Africa is very affordable.)
