1) Food Tour

Austin has just about any kind of fantastic food that you could think of. Of course, there’s the kind of amazing Mexican food that you would expect to find in Texas, as well as delicious barbecue.

However, Austin is also the capital city of Texas, and it’s home to a major university. That’s why there’s all kinds of foods that you would expect to find in a major city and happening college town.

That’s why I recommend booking Food Tours Austin. On this amazing tour, we’ll be able to nosh on some of the yummiest eats in the entire city! You’ll have enough food for two meals on this amazing adventure.

Then get ready for some delicious food!

As I mentioned earlier, of course you are going to want to have some barbecue on any Austin Texas food tour. That’s just science. So I was thrilled that we stopped at one of the best barbecue places in Downtown Austin on this tour.

Their specialty is brisket, and you just tell them the amount of meat you want (by weight) and they serve it to you. It’s so delectable that it actually melts in your mouth.

The tour also has a drink upgrade, and so I got a local beer with my barbecue. This was super tasty and the perfect choice because I don’t think brisket goes well with a cosmo.

Our guide also allowed us to select a side and I got the smoky baked beans. I also added some barbecue sauce on the side because in Texas brisket isn’t served with sauce. However, the meat was so delicious that it didn’t really need any sauce.

If you’ve never spent time in Austin before, it’s possible that you haven’t heard of migas. However, in my humble opinion, migas are some of the most delicious things you could ever eat. These babies are eggs and tortilla strips all folded up with flavorful sauce and cuddled in a breakfast taco.

You really need to eat these at least once when you are in Austin. The place where we got our migas supposedly has the best migas in the entire city. It certainly has the long lines to prove it. However, if you are on the food tour, you won’t need to wait on line to get one. Lucky you!

After two large helpings of classic Texas food, you’re probably going to want a break. Why not clean a bit with a serving of fresh juice at a popular juicery. After all, Austin surely has its hippie side, as it is beloved by Willie Nelson and his many fans. Some people even call the city The People’s Republic of Austin.

On the tour, we were all presented with the Wondershowzen. Can you guess what makes it green? If you said kale, you’re very close! It’s actually spinach. But don’t worry! It didn’t taste like spinach at all, just peanut butter and sweet, sweet goodness.

In Texas, it’s against the law to only have one taco on a food tour. We needed to have another. After the migas, we were ready for a funkier taco flavor, and in this case that meant getting some with Korean fried rice on top.

You are allowed to choose your spice level on this tour, and I do recommend the spicy, which had an awesome kick. But of course, if you don’t like spicy food, just opt for the mild. I won’t make fun of you. (Much.)

The drink upgrade at this stop included some ranch water, which sounded kind of awful. I mean, I’m not a horse, here! But ranch water is actually tequila and lime mixed with a popular Mexican mineral water named Topo Chico.

Yes, the cocktail actually does get mixed in the bottle, which is tons of fun and very refreshing on a hot Texas day.

However, even a Texas food tour can’t be all tacos. Sometimes you have to mix it up and throw a few tamales in there. We got ours at a Very Fancy restaurant with a real Dale Chihuly chandelier on the ceiling. Got to love that touch of class.

This tamale was especially mild and juicy because it was baked in a banana leaf. After the spice of the taco, this was a subtle palate cleanser to get us ready for dessert!

Isn’t that the coolest dessert you’ve ever seen? I mean, it was especially magically for me because two of my favorite foods are cannoli and pizzas, and this is actually a cannoli pizza. I want this beauty for my birthday present next year.

This dish came from a very traditional Italian pizzeria, but this baby is the only non trad dish that they serve on their menu. It is certainly the only cannoli pizza I have ever seen, but I dearly hope it won’t be the last.

I hope that I have persuaded you to give this amazing food tour a chance and that you can see why it’s one of the best tours in Austin Texas. You’ll have to book the tour for yourself to find out all the secrets that I didn’t share with you.

2) Ghost and Bat Tour

Most cities these days have food tours. I’ve even been to a food tour in Cape May, New Jersey, which is a pretty small place to be able to support a food tour. But a ghost/bat tour? That’s something you’re only going to find in Austin.

That’s why I say that this his Ghost/Bat tour of Austin is definitely one of the best tours in Austin Texas. If you haven’t read a ton about Austin, the idea of a bat tour might be a little confusing. Well, in all the months except for winter, there is a famous MASSIVE colony of bats that live in Austin under the Congress Street bridge. Naturally, because they are bats, they only come out at night.

For this reason, I think this Segway evening tours in Austin is one of the best tours in Austin Texas. First, your guide will teach you how to ride a Segway. Then he will escort you around Downtown Austin and tell you some of the coolest ghost stories around. Finally, he will help you get safely to the bats! Fun for all!

You can book this tour yourself by clicking here.

Then get ready for…

best tours in Austin Texas

There are a lot of cool ghost stories on this tour, and I don’t want to spoil things by telling you about all of them. I’m just going to get you familiar with a couple of my favorites. And our first ghost story of the night begins at the state capitol building, which scientists have determined is the pinkest capitol building in the country.

The ghost at the capitol building is the fabulously named Robert Marshall Love. He had a friend and coworker named WG Hill. However, WG Hill turned out to be a very false friend, which we might expect from any man who only goes by his initials.

Hill became convinced that Love was a criminal embezzler and so he murdered Love. Why didn’t he just call the cops? I mean, embezzling is a crime. It’s not like he thought Love stole his girlfriend or something. The cops generally won’t interfere in cases like that.

Our guide said that Love does not seem to realize that he is dead and doesn’t need to show up for work anymore. (That’s one of the few benefits of being dead.) He just keeps showing up to work at the capitol on a regular basis. I hope he’s getting paid Ghost Overtime for that.

My other favorite ghost story that we heard on the tour was the story of the haunted bridal suite at the Driscoll Hotel. As you can probably imagine, this tale is the story of a wedding that went wrong, terribly terribly wrong.

A young couple was meant to use this room as their honeymoon suite, but the groom got cold feet before the wedding and called the whole thing off. The failed bride went to the honeymoon suite by herself and took her own life. I wish I could go back in time and tell her that no man is worth it.

Anyway, I guess she got attached to the suite because now she lurks around waiting to haunt young couples on their honeymoon. Apparently some couples book this room on purpose because they want to get haunted on their special night. Whatever floats your boat, kids!

Finally it’s time for the ghost portion of the tour to be over and the bat portion to begin. As you can see, there’s going to be plenty of other people waiting under the bridge to meet our bat friends. (Most of them will not be taking the tour that evening.) Anyway, I was happy to meet these people because who wants to encounter a massive swarm of bats alone.

It was hard for me to get a good photo of the bats, but we did see a ton of them. And I’m so glad that I did because while I can eat, shop, and go to museums anywhere, these bats are an Austin only thing.

I did try making some friends by quoting Dracula and saying, “Children of the night! Listen to them! What music they make!” But I think these weren’t Dracula fans because they seemed very confused by my behavior.

24 Hour Tip

If you want to experience these bats for yourself on your journey exploring the best tours in Austin Texas, without having to go through my poor camera, just book the tour for yourself.

3) Austin Brunch Bus Tour

OK, I know I said that the bats were unique to Austin, but this brunch bus tour was pretty unique to the city as well. You might be wondering what a brunch bus tour is. As for myself, I had never taken one before I went looking for the best tours in Austin Texas.

I am definitely glad that I got on the brunch bus because it was both tons of fun and very Austin. On the brunch bus, you’ll be able to learn a lot about the city and taste three different kinds of food and drink at three different food stops.

But the best part is that there are live local musicians on the bus along with the guide. Austin is famous for its live music scene, so this is a totally local way to experience the city. It’s a one of a kind adventure that I’m sure you’ll agree is one of the best tours in Austin Texas.

I can’t tell you everything about the tour, but I’m going to tell you enough so that you’ll get an idea of what fun you can expect.

best tours in Austin Texas

Of course, any brunch in Austin has to include migas. As I explained in one of our earlier tours, migas are a kind of breakfast taco that’s extremely popular in Austin. These migas weren’t too spicy. You only get one of the tour but do not worry because we have two more food stops coming up!

And because this is a brunch tour, you also get a drink with every bite. With the migas, we got a cucumber-vodka spritz. They were extremely light and refreshing, which made them a little dangerous.

Some people also brought their own drinks on the brunch bus, which is allowed, so if you want some extra booze, go right ahead. I didn’t do this because I still had a full day of Austin sightseeing ahead of me.

For our next stop we got to go to an outdoor brewery and try something called shakshuka pizza. Pizza is always an excellent dish when you’re drinking because all those carbs soak up the booze.

Shakshuka is a Middle Eastern breakfast dish, and this pizza did have similar vibes because of the feta cheese and spices on top.

For the drink, we had pictures of shandies, which is beer mixed with lemonade. As with the cucumber sippers, these were dangerously drinkable.

For the last stop, we had a most Texas breakfast treat: the kolache. (It is pronounced Koh Lah Chee.) These treats originated from the Czech Republic but they’ve become super popular in Texas. After all, they’re basically just sausage rolls and who doesn’t love a good sausage roll?

best tours in Austin Texas

With the kolache, we got to pick our choice of hard cider. They told me the blood orange was the most popular, so that’s what I selected, and I was not disappointed.

24 Hour Tip

Those are all the secrets of the brunch bus that I can share with you for now, and I hope you’ll agree it’s one of the best tours in Austin Texas. You’ll have to take the tour during your 24 hours in Austin if you want to experience it for yourself.

Where to Stay?

There’s tons of places to stay while you’re looking for the best tours in Austin Texas because it’s a popular tourist attraction, a college city, and the capital of one of the largest states in the US. So you have plenty of options to choose from for your Austin in a day. But I choose to stay at the Stephen F Austin Royal Sonesta Hotel.

This hotel has a great location right in the middle of downtown Austin, so you’re within walking distance of tons of bars and restaurants. However, the rooms were kept quiet, so I was able to sleep peacefully, no matter how noisy it got outside. There’s also a tasty restaurant on the property that serves the largest tortilla soup I have ever seen.
