Best Tours in Athens Greece

best tours in athens greece

1) Acropolis of Athens

The Acropolis is probably the first thing people think of when they think of Athens. Of course, you probably know that -polis means city, but what about acro? I looked it up and apparently it means High City, which coincidentally is the title of a Cheech and Chong movie.

But the Acropolis itself is the absolute must see event in Athens. You really can’t say you’ve been here unless you’ve come to the Acropolis to see the Parthenon, among other attractions. That’s why I recommend visiting on one of the best tours Athens Greece.

The lines here can be crazy long and it can be confusing to find your way around the masses of tourists. That’s why I suggest booking a tour in advance to check out the Acropolis. Your guide will help you avoid waiting on line in the sweltering Athens heat, and she’ll stuff your brain with a ton of fascinating facts!

Check tour rates and availability by going here.

Then get ready for an amazing adventure that you could really only experience in Athens!

There are so many reasons that the Acropolis is a must see destination. It’s going to be challenging for me to get to all of them in one blog post. However, I shall do my level best.

The Acropolis was the absolute center of olde tymey Athens. Would you like to hear the story of how Athens was founded? Of course you would! Every guide to the Acropolis tells this story, but I’m going to tell my version with my own panache.

Poseidon, the lord of the waves, and Athena, who was the goddess of book learning, had a battle because they both wanted to be the patron god of this particular city in Greece that didn’t have a name yet. So they decided to each give the city a gift, and then the city could decide which was best.

Poseidon, for some inexplicable reason, decided to give the city a fountain of salt water. Why is that something anyone would want? Who drinks salt water for fun? This tells me that Poseidon was spending too much time with fish ladies and not enough time with humans.

Athena was much more practical and gave the city an olive tree. This was way more useful than salt water and so they named the city Athens after her. They don’t call her the goddess of wisdom for nothing!

The Athenians also built the Parthenon for Athena, and we will spend a lot of time looking at it on this tour of the Acropolis. Don’t forget to look out for Athena’s very special own olive tree! It’s a can’t miss sight on one of the best tours Athens Greece.

The Parthenon looks as old as the oldest old that ever olded. Well, it is indeed old, but not the oldest structure in the world or anything. The Parthenon goes back to the 5th century BC. Athens had just been attacked by the Persian army and Athens was rebuilding everything.

Unfortunately for Athens, it has been sacked many times since the Persians. Everybody from the Ottoman Empire to the Visigoths has had a go at the Parthenon. (Seriously, what even are Visigoths?) Even the Venetians attacked Athens, and I thought the Venetians were just peace loving people who wanted to row around in gondolas all day drinking aperol spritzes.

The British have also attacked the Parthenon, but in a most unusual way. The Parthenon used to be decorated with marble images, but they were stolen by a British man named Lord Elgin, who turned out to be super shady. The marbles are now in the British Museum in London, but Greece would like them back. We’ll see how that goes!

The Parthenon is definitely not the only thing to see at the Acropolis, even if it is the most famous. I also enjoyed this stunning Odeon, which is a performance arena, and not a fancy restaurant in New York City that serves really good steak frites.

A wealthy patron named Herodes Atticus financed this project because he wanted people to remember his dead wife. That’s so sweet! And it kind of sucks that now I only remember Herodes Atticus and not his wife at all. Unless we want to call her Mrs. Atticus.

Naturally because the Odeon is in Athens, it has been attacked a bunch of times, including by some people called Herulians. Why didn’t we study the Herulians in school? #knowyourherulian

Pro tip! Be super careful when you’re wandering around here. The rocks can be quite slippy and there’s tons of tourists about.

Also, never, never, never, EVER, never, under any circumstances, NEVER touch the columns of the Parthenon. You can’t always see them, but there are guards everywhere just waiting to smack you down for this action. They’re as scary as a horde of invading Venetians.

After touring the Acropolis, we’ll be heading over to the amazing Acropolis Museum. (The tour continues here, which is one of the reasons I say it is one of the best tours Athens Greece.) It’s just not safe to leave actual ancient sculptures and things outside, which is why the sculptures exist in the museum, safe and cool.

You’ll also learn even more about the nefarious Lord Elgin and why the British should give the marbles back to Greece. There are replicas of the Elgin Marbles in the Acropolis Museum, but I’ve seen the real thing in London, and it’s not quite the same.

best tours athens greece

Another pro tip about what to be on the look out for in the museum. You’re allowed to take photos in some parts of the museum, but you’re not allowed to take photos in other parts. The guards are really attentive, so they’ll yell at you if you forget. But fortunately, you have your guide of one of the best tours Athens Greece with you to remind you.

You might be wondering how Lord Elgin managed to swindle all these marbles away from Greece, so I’m happy to share the story. I mean, I’m not happy because it’s a bit of a bummer of a story, but at least it’s entertaining.

best tours athens greece

Can you see these decorative marbles in my photo above? Wouldn’t they look cool on the side of the Parthenon? But sadly, these aren’t even the real marbles. These are the replicas. And it’s all “Thanks” to Lord Elgin.

Lord Elgin visited Greece back when it belonged to the Ottoman Empire. He insisted that the Ottoman Empire gave the marbles to him and that he was allowed to have them removed and taken back to England. Then he sold the sculptures to the British government, and they were placed in the British Museum.

Did the Ottoman Empire actually tell Elgin he could take the marbles? Your guess is as good as mine. But the Ottoman Empire didn’t have the right to give the marbles to Elgin someday. I hope the British Museum will do the right thing and give the marbles back because they already have so many other incredible objects, some of which were possibly not stolen.

24 Hour Tip

If you booked the tour of the Acropolis that I suggested, your tour of this museum is included.

Those are just a few of the fascinating facts that you’ll learn on the tour of the Acropolis, one of the best tours Athens Greece…but you have to book the tour for yourself to find them.

2) Greek Food Tour

There is so much excellent food in Greece. I think it’s one of the most underrated culinary destinations in the world. They’ve got exquisite seafood, meat, sauces, pastries, wine…it never ends. That’s why I suggest getting to know Greek food tour, on this amazing private food tour, which is definitely one of the best tours Athens Greece

Since this is a private food tour, I can pretty much guarantee you won’t eat what I ate. I asked for an especially adventurous food tour, and this is what I got. So if these bites are a little too adventurous for you, don’t worry! I’m sure you’ll get something just as delicious but a little less unusual.

The first thing we ate on my food tour was some of the most fun fish I have ever eaten. I’m sure you know that Greece has a ton of islands and is surrounded by water, so it makes sense that they are experts on seafood.

This little kiosk serves up crispy fried smelt with lemon on top, for the convenience and joy of all passersby. Well, at least all passersby who are willing to pay up for some amazing fish! And that definitely includes me.

This dish kind of reminds me of the classic British fish and chips, if the fish and the chips because it’s sort of like the fish have been turned into little French fries. Fish fries, if you will.

I didn’t know this before visiting Athens, but Greece is actually famous for amazing soup. Because Greece is an Eastern Orthodox country, Easter is a super important holiday there. At Easter, Greek people like to eat lamb because it represents Jesus, who is known as the Lamb of God. They also serve this special green soup.

I am used to eating lamb at Easter, but I had never tried this soup before. It’s made with lamb and oregano and lemon, which are a traditional part of many Greek foods. And it’s nice to know that no part of the lamb is wasted at Easter.

Are you ready for an even more adventurous soup? How about some patsas? They make this soup with cow stomach (aka tripe) and cows feet. Supposedly it is the perfect cure for any hangover.

As for the taste, it was rather sour, so if you like hot and sour soup from Chinese restaurants, I think you’ll enjoy this soup. I promise that you can’t see the cow feet!

Our final stop is at a Cretan restaurant. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a Cretan restaurant, so I don’t think I was going in with any preconceived notions about Cretan cuisine. But getting to try Cretan cuisine is just one reason this is one of the best tours Athens Greece.

I certainly wasn’t expecting to eat snails, though I’ve had them before in Paris and enjoyed them. These snails were different from French snails because those generally are made with butter and garlic, and these were made with rosemary and olive oil.

However, these Cretan snails were just as delicious, and I really couldn’t stop snacking on them. Bet you can’t eat just one!

And for the final course, we have liver cooked with honey! I grew up half-Jewish in New York City, so I have eaten a whole bunch of chopped liver, and I adore it. And this was even better because I had never had liver with honey before.

I just love finding new ways to eat liver!

best tours athens greece

Of course, you didn’t think we would neglect a Greek drink, did you? We’ve got as much raki, which is anise-flavored, as you could possibly want. Seriously, as soon as I had taken one shot, my guide filled up my glass again. I was swimming in raki at the end of the meal!

If snails and liver aren’t up your alley, don’t worry! I’m sure you will be able to indulge in all the Greek goodies you could want! This was the tour that I wanted, and if you want to try gyros and baklava, I’m sure you can get something very similar. That’s the joy of taking a private food tour, and one of the best tours Athens Greece.

3) Athens Under the Moonlight

All right, we’ve done a history and architecture tour, a food tour, and now we’re getting ready for an evening and nightlife tour. There will be delicious food, fun nightlife vibes, and LOTS of Greek booze.

We will have the guides of our Athens Under the Moonlight to show us the best possible time in Athens, and we will regret nothing! That’s why this is one of the best tours Athens Greece.

You can book this tour for yourself easily by heading here.

Then get ready for an extraordinary moonlit adventure!

best tours athens greece

This looks like water, doesn’t it? But it is actually tsipouro, which is a curiously powerful Greek brandy. Some of the other women on the tour felt it was too strong, but I am Irish-American and made of sterner stuff, booze-wise.

best tours athens greece

Of course, on any drinking tour, you’re going to need to keep eating, or you’ll get too drunk. Fortunately we’ve got lots of mezze, which are Greek small plates. There’s fried vegetables and eggplant and cheese and lots of good stuff!

best tours athens greece

On to the next stop! This photo might look like white wine, but it’s actually something called retsina wine that is made with the sap of a pine tree. It doesn’t taste like a Christmas tree or anything, though, and it’s super Greek!

best tours athens greece

Ready for even more food to soak up that booze? Then get ready for a gyro, which is a classic Greek sandwich made with rotisserie meat. It’s really the perfect drunk food. Thanks, Greeks!

Also, if you want to pronounce this food correctly, say “yee-ro”, even though it’s spelled “jy-ro”. You’re welcome!

best tours athens greece

The last stop was at an awesome roof top bar with outstanding views of the Parthenon. Here, you get one drink, and it’s anything you wish for. However, I had never sipped ouzo, which is the most famous Greek drink, so I felt I had to try it.

It tastes like anise, so if you’re into licorice, this is the beverage for you! And it goes amazingly well with this view.

best tours athens greece

Just look at that! Have you ever seen anything more beautiful? Now go and check it out in person for yourself.

If you want to find all these gems during your time in Athens, just go ahead and book this tour!
