Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

1) Ljubljana Food Tour

My favorite way to see any city is on a food tour. Food tours are like walking tours, only with more food. That’s just science. And on a food tour, you get to try many more different kinds of foods than you would on your own.

You can also meet and eat with other tourists, and you’ll learn about the history of a city through its delicious treats! What could possibly be more fun than this sort of adventure? I really can’t think of anything.

On this excellent Ljubljana food Tour you will be able to nosh on amazing local treats and experience the wonders of Slovenian dairy, which just might be the greatest dairy products in the world. So join me for a day of fun!

Check rates and availability right here.

I can’t guarantee you’ll try everything I did, but I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time. I am not going to tell you about all the delicious foods that I ate or about all of the historical tidbits that I learned because I want you to try the tour for yourself.

But I do want you to get a good idea of what to expect and why this is one of the best Ljubljana Slovenia tours.

Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

I found Ljubljana to be a great city for shopping because it is such a walkable city. I can think of very few cities I have been to where there were so few cars. My guide said that Ljubljana is often considered one of the greenest cities in Europe for this and other reasons.

And we can just go ahead and walk to Ljubljana’s excellent and massive food market. This market is both indoors and outdoors, and it’s located in a colonnade designed by a famous local architect. (We could ask him how he got his ideas, but he is dead, so that won’t work.)

At this market, we will feast on the finest meats, cheeses, and breads in all of Slovenia. Are you looking for an opportunity to snack on some amazing bear salami? Then this is the place for you!

Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

How about these fabulous breads? You can try anything from buckwheat bread to a tarragon flavored sweet roll. (I know that sounds a bit odd, but it was actually delicious.)

Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

Did I promise you cheese? Then cheese you shall have! We got to try all kinds of delicious Slovenian cheeses on the food tour. It would be hard to say which one I liked the best, but I think the sheep cheese was my favorite because it has the most pungent taste.

You can always put some bear salami on it, if you wish.

Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

Did you remember when I said that Slovenia had a truly amazing dairy selection? Well, part of the fabulous dairy includes wonderful, fresh, unpasteurized, scrumptious milk. And in Ljubljana, you can actually drink the stuff directly from these automatic milk carts for a very reasonable fee, which was included in the tour.

I happen to really like milk, but this milk surpassed even my wildest dreams. It was basically the milk of heaven. I do not know who would provide the milk in heaven, but I assume that it would be angels. That’s just basic theology.

We can’t have milk this good in the United States because of “laws” about pasteurization. Curse you, FDA, public health, and the rule of law!

Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

OK, I did promise you that we were not only going to have food on this food tour. We will also dive into some history and fun facts. I try to not tell about most of the fun facts I learned because it is better to take the tour yourself and experience the fun for yourself! So you’ll mostly just hear about the food from me.

However, I do want to point out the spectacular doors, which you can see in my photo above. I think the chance to see these doors is one thing that makes this tour one of the best Ljubljana Slovenia tours.

You might notice that there is a ton of business going on these doors, and you might be wondering what they would be. It actually shows the history of the country. You can see everything from the earliest inhabitants of Slovenia to the Ottoman Empire to Pope John Paul II. Basically every century is covered.

However, do not get the history confused. Slovenia never belonged to the Ottoman Empire, unlike Bosnia and some other nearby countries. Instead, it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, like Bosnia and some other nearby countries.

Before I went to Slovenia, I did not know that the country was famous for delicious and affordable wines. (This is also true of other countries in Eastern and Central Europe, like the Czech Republic, Moldova, and Croatia.) You often cannot get these wines or spirits outside of the country easily, so it is a great way to try something adventurous and tasty.

We sipped on some traditional Slovenian spirits. They were all sweet after dinner drinks, but not in a sugary sweet way. The flavors were ginger, blueberry, fig, and honey. All were tasty, but I think the honey might have been my favorite. Delicious!

For the final and biggest stop on the tour, we got to sit down with a filling and scrumptious lunch. This was at a Slovenian restaurant where many people who work on the staff have special needs. So you’re doing something good for the community by eating here, as well as something good for your tummy because the food is great.

I opted for the turkey stew because it was the lightest option and I had already been stuffed myself on the most exquisite Slovenian cheeses and bear salami. Also, I did not realize that they had turkey in Slovenia because I thought it was strictly an American bird. But the stew was satisfying, so the Slovenians obviously knew how to cook our turkey.

2) Ljubljana Castle and City Tour

This is my other option for the best Ljubljana Slovenia tours. This guided tour of the castle and surrounding area will help you understand all about this delightful city and the fun things to see there.

Ljubljana Castle has fascinating history that dates all the way back to Roman times, and it also features incredible views of the city. I think you should spend enough time in Ljubljana so that you can explore the whole city, but if you only have enough time to see one thing in Ljubljana, let it be this castle, and let it be this tour!

Also, there is a sweet funicular that takes you up to the top of the castle hill, so it’s like a special little bonus treat ride for your enjoyment.

Check rates and availability by going here.

I don’t want to spill all the castle’s secrets, but I do want to spill enough to make you curious about this tour!

Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

Did I not promise that Ljubljana Castle has been around since the Romans? Well, here are some Romans for proof! No, the Romans did not build the castle themselves. The castle was not built until after the Romans left. However, the Romans did build a military encampment here because that is what the Romans were good at.

Was there anyone here before the Romans? Yes, there were Celts! I was shocked to find that Celts lived this far East. I am of Irish ancestry, and I always think the Celts were just in the British Isles and Northwestern France, like Normandy. But apparently we get around more than I thought.

Can you see that little room behind the Romans in that photo? It actually hides a well. The citizens of Ljubljana covered it up because they didn’t want outsiders sneaking into the city through the well, or poisoning the well.

Yikes! Was well poisoning something people did a lot in the old days? That truly sounds like a horrible way to die!

Do you recognize this strange fellow in my photo above? Well, he is supposed to be Saint George. You know, that guy who slew all those dragons or possibly just one very big dragon. I thought he was the patron saint of England, but they love him in Slovenia too because they say he killed a dragon who was menacing the daughter of a lord.

I really want to know how George got from Ljubljana so easily because I know that they did not have airplanes back in those days. Did he ride on the back of a dragon?

Saint George will show up again in Ljubljana Castle because they have a little chapel that is dedicated to him. You can see it and George killing the dragon in this photo:

The dragon has become a symbol of Ljubljana, and you can even buy very cute stuffed dragons at the tourist center. (Did I buy one, and is it sitting on my bookshelf right now? I’ll never tell!)

However, Ljubljana Castle also has another adorable castle mascot: Friderik. What kind of adorable animal do you think this might be? A puppy? A kitten? A plump Slovenian bunny?

No, Friderik is a rat. But he is a pretty cute rat, and if you have any oddball children in your life, I’m sure they’ll enjoy a Friderik the Slovenian Rat souvenir.

Many famous people have been held prisoner in this castle or have stayed here for political reasons. However, arguably the most famous was the Emperor Napoleon. Yes, Napoleon’s army got as far as Slovenia, and so he was in these very castle walls for a time. Wild!

You will be able to tour the dungeons on your trip, but it is very unlikely you will run into Napoleon Bonaparte. Unless you have psychic powers. I do not know your life.

Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

My favorite story about a prisoner in this castle was a fellow named Eramus. He was a nobleman who was arrested because he decapitated another lord. Did he have a good reason for doing that? Can you have a good reason for decapitating a lord?

Anyway, he escaped from the castle through the tunnels that were used for removing waste from the toilets. Why, he was the original Shawshank Redemption! I hope it was worth it because that sounds like a truly vile experience.

Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

The castle also has a museum that contains objects from all throughout Slovenian history. You’ll see artifacts from the Roman times all the way to the present day.

Some of the objects are reproductions because the originals are held in more secure fashion somewhere. Like this person you can see in my photo above is actually an imitation human.

Say hello to your skinny new friends! I wonder why the kings are so friendly with these skeletons. Seems like it would be easy for a king to have living friends.

Best Ljubljana Slovenia Tours

Can you tell who this guy is? Yes, it’s the ex leader of Communist Yugoslavia, Josip Tito. (I mean, it’s his bus, it’s not the real Tito.) Slovenia was once part of Yugoslavia, but after the fall of communism, it separated into its own country.

There was actually a War of Independence between Slovenia and the rest of Yugoslavia. I guess they felt that Slovenia should be forced to stay. According to the museum, Serbia was especially opposed to Slovenia leaving.

However, the war was short lived because Serbia cared more about Croatia staying part of Yugoslavia. (Too late!) I’m not sure why they cared more about Croatia, but I guess it has something to do with all the Mediterranean coast line. Someone should have told them that Ljubljana has a whole fleet of dragons and maybe they would have been more interested in keeping Slovenia.
