Quick question! How much do you know about Serbian food? If the answer is, “Basically nothing,” don’t worry about it! I felt the same way when I went to Belgrade. All I knew about Serbian food is that they were famous for meat, but I didn’t even know what kind of meat! Was it elk? Gnu? Who knew?

So, on this first of our best Belgrade Serbia tours you might get a chance to start your breakfast with a very Serbian experience: rakia! Rakia is fruit brandy, and it is extremely popular in Balkan countries. I have had rakia everywhere from Albania to North Macedonia. I suggest you do the same and decide which version you like the best.

Along with the rakia, we had some powerful Turkish coffee and snacked on some Turkish delights, which are the sweets that got Edmond to cross over to the White Witch in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Serbia was part of the Ottoman Empire for years, so this is why you can find Turkish coffee and sweets here. In fact, the restaurant where we ate these goodies is the oldest restaurant in Belgrade. I am not going to tell you what it is called. Perhaps you will be able to figure it out from the sign in my photo.

Don’t worry if the rakia and Turkish delight don’t seem like enough food for one day. We’re not going to stop there. I can’t show you everything we ate on the food tour, but I will show you enough so that you know what to expect.

Have you ever been interested in eating tobacco? I’m not talking about the plant that some people smoke. I’m talking about a particular kind of yummy meat dish that tastes like pulled pork and actually melts in your mouth. It’s like cotton candy if cotton candy were made of meat. (You can see exactly what it looks like in my photo above.)

What about cheese? If you’ve stuffed your face full of tobacco, you’ll get to check out some fantastically fresh Serbian cheeses. You might not have come to Serbia just for the cheese, but consider it an amazing little tasty bonus.

Also, I learned that the actor Robert DeNiro worked in this market when he was traveling around Europe as a young man. He liked Serbia so much that he named his daughter after a Serbian river. That’s not a fun fact you’ll hear on just any tour!

One of my favorite stops on the tour was Skadarlija, which is the Bohemian neighborhood in Belgrade. You can tell because of this sign showing how far it is to other artistic neighborhoods like Montmartre in Paris.

We stopped here for some snacks and local beer and enjoyed the amazing people watching and the gorgeous view of the cute cobblestone streets. What could be nicer than this? That’s why it is one of the best Belgrade Serbia tours.

Of course, the most convenient kind of tour you can take in Belgrade is a Big Tour, which will take you around the city by vehicle and walking. You will be able to see some of the most amazing attractions in Belgrade, and you won’t have to stay inside a vehicle the entire time.

You’ll see many of Belgrade’s most fascinating attractions on this tour, but my favorite is the Belgrade fortress. Just look at the astonishing views! You’re not going to see something like this back in your hometown, unless you are from Belgrade.

This fortress was founded all the way back in the 2nd century, so that means it must have belonged to the Romans. I mean, I’m not saying that the Romans were the only ones doing anything in Europe back in the 2nd century, but I am not saying that they weren’t, you know? And the Roman in charge of this fortress was a dude named Flaviae IV.

The fortress does not have a ton of Roman ruins around nowadays, but there are a few. You can locate them near the Pasha’s Drinking Fountain, but your guide will also help you find them, so it will be easy.

There are so many things to see at Belgrade Fortress, from museums to zoos, that it can be tempting to spend all day here. But fortunately we are on a tour, so we won’t be able to do that. There is still so much more to do in Belgrade!

After the fortress, you’re going to explore so many different parts of the city that I couldn’t possibly share them all with you or it would take all day. But I will point out the Hotel Moskva, which is one of the prettiest buildings in Belgrade.

It’s over a century old, and it was supposedly done in a Russian style, although I am not exactly sure what is Russian about it. I do know that Moskva means Moscow in Russian, but don’t worry! The hotel is one hundred percent in Serbia.

This hotel has survived eight different national identities. I can’t name all of them, but I do know that one is the Austro-Hungarian Empire and another is Yugoslavia. Belgrade has really been through some real stuff.

However, the St. Sava Church is arguably even better than the Hotel Moskva. It is the biggest Orthodox church in all of Serbia, and it is considered to be a major symbol of the city. The church is less than a century old, so it’s much newer than the other symbol of the city, Belgrade Fortress.

It’s stunningly golden on the inside and outside. Don’t forget to look up to see the eighteen golden crosses placed on the domes of the church.

Now look at all this gold in the basement! Who knew a basement could be so fancy? I thought basements were just for storing casks of Amontillado and dead bodies and things.

3) Nis Day Trip

Before going to Belgrade, it’s entirely possible that you haven’t heard of Nis. And that’s okay! It’s the third largest city in Serbia, and sure, it isn’t as stunning as Novi Sad, nor does it have as much to do as Belgrade does. But it’s still an excellent and fascinating option for a day trip.

The best way to see Nis is on a day trip from Belgrade, and I suggest booking this one. You’ll be able to get up close and personal with Nis, and it’s an affordable way to travel to the city.

The most prominent place you will stop in Nis is probably King Milan Square, which you can see in my photo above. I am definitely not saying that this is the most famous tourist destination in Nis, but it is in the center of town and you can’t miss it.

The most notable landmark in this square is the statue that is dedicated to the Liberators of Nis. I bet you didn’t even know that Nis had liberators, right? Well, we learn something new every day.

Apparently this statue is not dedicated to an individual. It commemorates the soldiers who fought for Serbia on several occasions, including against the Ottoman Empire and during World War I. (If you remember, World War I was partially started by a Serbian nationalist, so it makes sense that there are World War I statues in the country.)

Also, do not forget to check out the adorable and colorful buildings splashed all around the square. Unfortunately, Nis has a lot of Communist buildings, which I do not really care for, so these were a welcome relief.

OK, this baby in my photo above is the most famous attraction in the city. Of course, I am speaking about Nis Fortress. I sometimes wonder how many fortresses there can be in Serbia. It seems like just an extraordinary number. Is this the case in basically every European country, or is it just because Serbia has been involved in so many military conflicts?

The fortress looks hella old, but it actually only dates back to the 1700s. If you are up on your Serbian history, you will know that means that the Ottoman Turks built this fortress. That makes sense because they were always conquering territory. And when you do that, you need a fortress.

What I cannot believe is that this priceless fortress that is centuries old is just allowed to lie around in the middle of Nis like this. You can see the residents of Nis just wandering by it on their way to work. In the United States, this would never stand. Someone would be making money off of this baby!

If you are anything like me, you knew absolutely nothing about Nis before taking this day trip. Also, if you are anything like me, you had literally no clue that you could find a jazz museum anywhere in Serbia, let alone in Nis. That’s why it was a surprise and a delight to find the Nisville Jazz Museum. They host a massive jazz festival in Nis each summer called Nisville.

Apparently there are some ways that Serbian folk music and jazz are similar, so the festival showcases both kinds of music. Everyone from the late, great American R&B singer Solomon Burke to the Serbian-Romani folk singer Shaban Bajramovic is featured here.

It’s amazing how a love of music can bring people from all over the world together.

In case you need a place for lunch while you are in Nis, allow me to recommend my favorite lunch spot, which is called Tramvaj. I think that you pronounce it “tram way” because this restaurant is mostly located in an old tram car, although there is outdoor dining too. The food is delicious and the ambiance is spectacular! i

I suggest their savory pancakes because they are famous for them. I selected the ones that were filled with cheese and ham, and they were also topped with hearty dollops of sour cream.

These pancakes were so light, just as light as a baby’s dreams. They’ll fill you up, but not keep you so full that you will not be able to eat lunch. And the cucumbers and tomatoes were delightfully fresh as well.

You might not have time for a full dessert, but I do suggest getting this sweet coffee drink, made with coffee ice cream and chocolate syrup. We had cucumbers in our lunch, so that cancels out the calories in this drink. That’s just science.
