Where To Stay?

Obviously there are quite a few cities or towns in Barbados, but we’re focusing on Bridgetown for this Barbados Welchman Hall Gully tour, so that’s where I am looking for hotels. You want a convenient location where you can meet your tour of the island, and where it will be easy to get to the main attractions. Bridgetown is the capital city of Barbados, and it’s certainly the largest city in Barbados, so that’s where we’ll go

That’s why I recommend staying at the Hotel PomMarine. It’s right off the beach, which is so important for any Barbados vacation. However, it’s also fully equipped with free wifi, a great 24-hour staff, and lovely rooms. This is the perfect place to stay if you want to kick back and relax on the beach or if you want to see the sights in Bridgetown.

Morning: Explore Welchman Hall Gully

As you can see in my photo, Barbados Welchman Hall Gully is an extraordinary place filled with beautiful nature. I was visiting Barbados as part of a cruise ship shore excursion, so it was easy to find a guide to take us here, and I strongly suggest you get a guide as well.

Whether you’re on a cruise or traveling to Barbados on your own, you’ll get a lot more out of Welchman Hall Gully if you go with a guide who can explain the natural beauty and point the monkeys out to you, and this wonderful tour is the best way to see Welchman Hall Gully.

Approximately Top 5: Barbados Welchman Hall Gully

1) Scenic Drive

Whether you are visiting Barbados on a cruise ship or staying at one of its fine hotels, I can pretty much guarantee that you won’t be staying IN the Barbados Welchman Hall Gully. That’s why your guide will take you on a scenic drive from your pickup spot to the Gully itself.

In my experience, Barbadian guides are always full of knowledge, and so you should expect to hear about everything from how Barbados got its independence to how Rihanna became a billionaire. (Yes, that’s with a B.)

I especially liked hearing that Barbados has over 1,200 rum shops, which are sometimes called watering holes. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

2) Spectacular Views

One of my favorite things about visiting Welchman Hall Gully was getting an eyeful of these spectacular views! From here, you can see the Scotland District of Barbados, as well as Mount Hillaby, which is the highest point on the entire island.

I must admit that I was a little surprised to learn that Barbados had a Scotland District. I mean, I have been to Scotland, and it doesn’t look anything like Barbados. (Also, the weather is extremely different.)

However, I know that Barbados used to be a British colony (more on this later) so perhaps they had a good reason for calling this the Scotland District. Maybe Mount Hillaby reminded them of the Highlands. Who am I to judge?

3) A Plethora of Plants

There are so many different kinds of plants to spot at Welchman Hall Gully, and your guide will be able to explain to you what they all are. Some of my favorites included the bearded fig tree, which is less beardy than I expected, the amusingly named dog dumpling tree, which is also called the noni, and the nutmeg trees because nutmeg is delicious.

Our guide told us that the dog dumpling plant, though ridiculous sounding, actually boosts your immune system. So be sure to eat as much as you can when you are in Barbados! I promise they are not actually made out of dogs.

In 2021, in the space of three weeks, Barbados was hit by three natural disasters: a volcano, a tornado, and a hurricane. As you can imagined, this damaged some of the plants in Barbados Welchman Hall Gully, but fortunately they are growing back. Nature is healing!

4) GREEN MONKEYS!

The green monkeys in Barbados are absolute superstars. There’s no guarantee that they will come out when you explore Welchman Hall Gully, unfortunately. However, they love the Gully because it has so many fruit plants, so there’s a good chance you’ll see a monkey or three.

As you can see from my photo above, I did see a monkey, and I took its picture. It’s not as easy as you might think to get a decent photo of a green monkey hopping from tree to tree, armed with only a cell phone camera, so I feel pretty pleased with myself.

Our guide says that the green monkeys are actually considered pests because they eat fruit, but I have a hard time believing that. They are so cute and fluffy and they are amazing at jumping. I think everyone in my tour could have just watched the monkeys jump all day and been satisfied.

5) Queen Elizabeth Plaque

I visited Barbados not too long after Queen Elizabeth II died, so our guide made sure to point out this plaque commemorating the visit that Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip took to Barbados in the 1970s. People in Barbados have rather complicated feelings about the British royal family, as I’m sure you can imagine.

However, the Windsor family isn’t particularly important to Barbados at this point in time. Back in the 1970s, when the Queen visited, Barbados was an independent country, but it remained part of the British Commonwealth, so it made sense that the Queen would stop in Barbados. Barbados is now a Republic, so King Charles isn’t the head of the country or anything.

Those are all the secrets of the Welchman Hall Gully tour I can share for now!

Afternoon: Batts Rock Beach

Barbados is one of the best beach countries in the entire world, and I’ve spent a ton of time in the Caribbean, so I hope you can trust me. After an exciting morning walking through Welchman Hall Gully and chasing green monkeys, I suggest getting nice and cozy on Batts Rock Beach.

This beach is a public beach, and it’s popular with locals, so you’re not going to be too surrounded by tourists, though there will surely be a cruise ship group or two. Bring a mystery novel, get nice and cozy, and snuggle up with…

Three Fun Facts: Batts Rock Beach

1) What Amenities Are Available?

When I went to Batts Rock Beach, you could rent a beach chair alone, or you could rent two beach chairs and an umbrella. I would have liked an umbrella, but as a solo traveler, I didn’t think I needed two beach chairs. I mean, I could always use one for my imaginary friend, but perhaps other people would think it was odd.

With the beach chairs, we got to try some of the rum punch, which really put the punch back in rum punch, if you know what I mean. Actually, you probably don’t know what I mean because that phrase doesn’t really make sense.

I mean both that there was a lot of spice and a lot of booze in the drink, both of which I appreciated. They do not skimp on the rum in Barbados, generally speaking.

2) What about lunch?

Fortunately, there’s a good restaurant right at Batts Rock Beach called La Cabane. You can place an order, and the server will bring you your food right on the beach! Be kind and leave a good tip because it’s hot out!

I ordered the fish brochettes, which were served with fresh vegetables, and the whole thing was delicious! The fish was obviously fresh and perfectly seasoned. The prices are a little high, but that’s to be expected in a place like Barbados that attracts so many tourists, and at least the food is yummy!

My only question is–why was this served with ketchup? There were no potatoes or anything, and it would have been a real shame to put ketchup on such a fresh piece of fish. I looked around for a long time and couldn’t figure out the answer to this question.

3) What’s the water like?

I really liked this beach as a solo traveler because the water was close to the chairs. That meant it was easy for me to skip down and splash around in the water while still keeping an eye on my stuff. It’s also easier to do that when the beach is not so crowded.

The water, as you can see from my photo, is impossibly blue and lovely. There are some waves, even if you don’t go in too deep, but nothing too rough or anything, and the temperature is lovely and warm.

Right outside the beach, there are showers, changing rooms, and restrooms, if you need them. There’s also a foot washing station where you can quickly get any sand off before getting into a car or a bus. Basically, this beach has anything you could possibly need!

Evening: Return to the Cruise Ship

For this part of the day, I’m assuming that you’re relaxing back on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. I always cruise with Royal Caribbean because I get loyalty points. At this point I am up to being a Diamond Member, which means that I get four free drinks a day, and I get access to their Diamond Lounge. Not too shabby!

Our lunch was a little light, so you might want to stop at the soft serve machine for a snack. The last time I cruised with Royal Caribbean, they had an attendant taking care of the soft serve and handing people the flavors they want. As you can see from my photo, I always go with swirl.

Royal Caribbean also does a different drink special every day, which is a fun adventure. I like to order the drink and then take it back to my room where I can sip it on my balcony, read a mystery novel, and relax without children spilling their pina coladas on me.

Royal Caribbean has several specialty restaurants on board their ships, so if you like Italian, you can go to Giovanni’s Table, if you like Japanese food, you can go to Izumi, and if you’re a fan of steak, you can go to Chops Grille. If you’re a fan of fine dining, I suggest treating yourself to a special meal at Chef’s Table.

However, these restaurants cost extra, whereas a meal in the regular dining hall is included with the price of the cruise. They do theme nights, but on the night that I went to Barbados, the theme seemed to be Royal Caribbean favorites, so we’re not doing a country theme like France or Mexico.

For the first course, I had the French onion soup, which was positively smothered in cheese. I literally had to use a knife to cut the cheese, which is just how I like my French onion soup.

For the main course, I had the lobster tail, which is always a crowd pleaser. This lobster came with rice, vegetables, and of course, the piece de resistance, butter sauce. I’ve never even heard one complaint in my life about butter sauce. It truly makes every shellfish dish better.

And finally, for dessert, we had the baked Alaska. It’s funny because I did a Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise, and I ate Baked Alaska then, but I thought it was just a treat they saved for their Alaskan cruises. I had no idea you could get it in the Caribbean.

After dinner, catch one of the evening’s entertainment. There could be anything from comedy, live music and dancing, or an ice skating show. At the end of the evening, turn in for bed with your towel animal. Sweet dreams!
